The novel is Green's first published work since 2012's ''Literature/TheFaultInOurStars''. He also described it as "my first attempt to write directly about the kind of mental illness that has affected my life since childhood", with his lifelong struggles with OCD and anxiety informing Aza's mental state.

* SuperOCD: Completely averted. Aza's OCD is all too realistic. It helps that John Green himself suffers from OCD.

Adult Fear is now a disambig, and this is misuse which boils down to "listing all the scary stuff without context"

* AdultFear:
** Your child almost dying in a car accident.
** The reality of having a child with a mental illness. You know something is tormenting your child but you don't really understand it and little or nothing will make their pain go away.
** That your friend will put you in their story and make you out to be TheMillstone, showing how they really feel about you.
** Sort of inverted with Russell Pickett, Sr., who fails to leave his sons money in his will. While the idea of dying and leaving their children with ''nothing'' would be terrifying to most parents, Pickett does it on purpose.

* RealityEnsues:
** While most of the estate has been left to a tuatara, as Aza's Mom puts it, the boys will at least have enough to get by, since the Picketts are still very well-off.
** Aza doesn't overcome her OCD even with meds, therapy and willpower. She can only manage it.
** ''Don't argue while driving''.
** [[spoiler:Hiding in an open sewer is a pretty good way to catch something nasty.]]

* AbusiveParents: Pickett was never physically abusive, but he clearly didn't care about his sons one whit, emotionally neglecting them and not leaving them ''any'' money. [[spoiler:He probably didn't expect to die when they were still so young, but still, that's cold.]] Notably, Davis doesn't seem to care whether he's alive or dead; he's mostly worried about how the whole thing is affecting his brother, and bribes Aza to not look into it.

* BothSidesHaveAPoint: Aza and Daisy both have legitimate reasons for being angry with each other. Daisy writing Aza into her fanfic as a thoroughly unsympathetic character simply isn't very nice, and she's not always the most understanding in regards to her friend's OCD. On the other hand, Aza doesn't always put forth very much effort into being a good friend, to the point where she doesn't even know the ''names'' of Daisy's parents, despite the fact that they've known each other since childhood, and Daisy is not wrong when she points out Aza can be extremely judgemental. [[spoiler:And they were both equally stupid for getting into this while Aza is ''driving''.]]
