The plot begins with a mismatched pair of hitmen, Lee Woods (young, successful, up and coming in the world of ProfessionalKillers), and Dosmo (aging, semi-retired, and well past his prime) going into the house of Roy and Becky Foxx, a couple whose marriage is ending. Woods drugs Becky, then asks Roy a series of strange questions before killing him, much to the confusion of Dosmo, who thought they were supposed to be collecting on gambling debts. Turns out Woods was hired to kill Roy, and recruited Dosmo for the sole purpose of framing him as the killer. Woods shoots Dosmo and leaves him in a car rigged to explode. In the company of his equally vicious girlfriend Helga, Woods goes to arrange the scene at the Foxx household so all evidence will lead to Dosmo, and once the cops find the evidence and Dosmo's body, they'll have nothing else to go on and Woods will get away clean.

Unfortunately for Woods, Dosmo survives being shot thanks to a bulletproof vest and manages to escape the car before it blows up. Over the course of two chaotic days, the lives and fortunes of the two hitmen will pull multiple people into their orbit before they clash once more, including several cops, rich but ''very'' obnoxious art dealer Allan Hopper, Hopper's much put upon assistant Susan and his sister Audrey, suicidal former TV Producer Teddy, and especially Becky Foxx, who was the one who hired Woods in the first place.

Added DiffLines:

* DecoyProtagonist: While the film makes it clear almost right away that it's an ensemble cast and isn't going to have one character getting all the spotlight, the audience probably expected frustrated CowboyCop Alvin (played by Jeff Daniels, coming off two of his most successful films to date in ''Film/DumbAndDumber'' and ''Film/{{Speed}}'') to play a larger role than he did. Instead he gets written out of the film about halfway through, kicked off the force due to his erratic behavior, and never reappears after getting notice that he is being dismissed.

* DeceasedFallGuyGambit: Woods recruited Dosmo for the hit on Roy Foxx specifically to use him for this. Woods made sure to plant some of Dosmo's cigarettes at the scene where he killed Roy, then shot Dosmo in the car after they left the scene and blew up the car, planning for the police to find Dosmo's body and match it to DNA evidence from the cigarettes. Dosmo survives thanks to a bulletproof vest and escapes before the car blows up. Amusingly, late in the movie it's shown that despite their questionable competence the police might not have gone for Woods' attempt at framing Dosmo, as they specifically note that the cigarettes are out of place considering how clean the rest of the scene is and how professionally the job was done.

* AmbitionIsEvil: Something of a theme for the film. Most of the characters lack either the talent or the ruthless drive and determination required to rise higher than where they are, and are just kind of going through the motions as life passes them by. The characters who either have succeeded in life or may still have a chance to do so, on the other hand, do have that sort of drive and LackOfEmpathy for others, and are without a doubt the most unlikeable or amoral characters in the film. During a shootout, he also orders Dosmo (who he believes to be an innocent bystander) not to endanger himself by leaving cover to help Wes, even when Webb threatens to kill Wes.

!Tropes for the film:
* HappyEndingMassage: Vice Officers Strayer and Taylor are busting "happy ending" massage parlors. But Taylor doesn't have the heart to subject the nice and clearly uncomfortable Asian girl doing his latest massage to a police raid, even though she grips his member and asks if he wants more.

However, Dosmo has the JerkWithAHeartOfGold thing going on, (along with a [[EveryoneHasStandards somewhat rough code of honor]]) while Woods is [[TheUnfettered an utterly ruthless killer]] who likes to play mental games with his victims beforehand, and [[MurderIsTheBestSolution will kill anyone who gets in his way]].
