Bill Owen, [[UsefulNotes/KnightFever MBE]], born William John Owen Rowbotham (14 March 1914 -- 12 July 1999), was a British actor best known for starring in ''Series/LastOfTheSummerWine'' as Compo for 27 years.

He made his first appearance in TheForties and was a familiar face in Creator/TheRankOrganisation's films. Creator/PeterRogers had hoped for him to be a regular in the ''Film/CarryOnSeries'', but Owen only appeared in four of the early films before dropping out to focus on theatre.

Alongside his acting work, he was also a songwriter during TheSixties. In 1971, he played the lead in the short-lived ''Series/CoppersEnd'' and in 1973, he was cast in his most famous role - the scruffy, working-class Compo Simmonite in ''Last of the Summer Wine'' - a role he would play until his death at the age of 85.
