* Many people refer to a certain medieval punishment as the '''stocks''' when they are actually referring to a '''pillory'''. Stocks are specifically the variation of a pillory that are affixed to the criminal's feet rather than their arms and head.
* A '''concentration camp''' and a '''death camp''' are not synonyms. A concentration camp is merely a camp in which a large population of people are detained (i.e. "concentrated"). Almost every major nation in modern history has used concentration camps, including the British in the Boer War and America with its internment of Japanese-Americans during UsefulNotes/WorldWarTwo. However, because mainstream usage of the phrase is almost exclusively associated with [[UsefulNotes/TheHolocaust concentration camps employed by the Nazis for the purpose of systematically exterminating "lesser" races (i.e. a "death camp")]], many people don't know the exact difference and will sometimes react with shock to its usage in other contexts.

* '''Sensuous''' refers to something relating to the senses, usually as opposed to a person's intellect. If someone was navigating across a dark room solely by feeling their way, their progress would be described as 'sensuous'. '''Sensual''' means physically pleasing. It's usually used with sexual connotations, although the word itself doesn't specifically mean that.

* A '''longboat''' is a large, heavy-duty ship's boat whose main purpose is to move large amounts of people and cargo between ship and shore. The name is sometimes used as if it were a synonym for any kind of ship's boat -- whaleboats seem to be especially frequently mislabeled longboats, despite being much smaller and lighter, visually distinct, and [[ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin made for hunting whales]].

** "'''Democratic socialist'''" is another term that gets misused a lot. A Democratic socialist is someone who wants the means of production to be owned and operated by the workers (as opposed to traditional authoritarian socialism, where the means of production are owned and operated by the government). It is not someone who wants free healthcare, free education, higher wages, more welfare for the poor/disabled and more regulation on businesses (though most democratic socialists do want these things), but the businesses in question are still privately owned and operated. That is a "'''social democrat'''".

Sanders identified himself as a democratic socialist even though his views actually lean more towards those of social democrats (he has stated that he doesn't want to end private ownership of business)[[/note]].
