Added DiffLines:

* AliensSpeakingEnglish: The VXX-199 are able to speak English (and other terrestrial languages) fluently. Somewhat justified as it is implied they have sampled human DNA and can grow clones.

Added DiffLines:

Added DiffLines:

* DoNotAdjustYourSet: A benevolent example; after a CurbStompBattle, the VXX-199 broadcast a message informing everyone on Earth that they have been freed from the dangers of the Horde. The message is sent simultaneously in dozens of languages on all sorts of devices.

* TranslatorMicrobes: Played with. Some Hordians speak a clumsy form of English, while others wear a crustacean-like creature on their heads that translate for them.
--->"You/All are the special ones -- you/all killed my first on Earth, and now you/here think/dream to kill me!"
** In the opposite direction, the humans have translation machines to speak to Hordians, though they aren't commonplace. A few humans have also learned to speak and read the Horde language.

!!''Strikeforce Morituri: Electric Undertow'' demonstrates the following tropes:

* AIIsACrapshoot: The city of Bejing is ruled by a tyrannical A.I. called "Emperor". [[spoiler:It's actually the alien VAX-177 controlling a city-sized [[OrganicTechnology organic spaceship]].]]
* AlienInvasion: The [=VXX199=] are waging a stealth invasion against humanity [[spoiler:and the Horde]] using psychically-controlled clones.
* NoBiochemicalBarriers/AllAtmospheresAreEqual: The atmosphere inside the [=VXX199=] spaceship on the dark side of the Moon is conveniently compatible with human physiology.
* ArtificialHuman: The [=VXX199=] use these to manipulate human social development. [[spoiler:They're doing something similar to the Horde on Mars.]]
* TheAssimilator: The "Emperor" A.I. sets out to do this to the protagonists.
* BenevolentAI: [[spoiler:The "Will Deguchi" that Dan and Random have been talking to is actually a military A.I. originally developed by the United States government. It's been secretly manipulating world events for decades trying to guide humanity to a better future, but is being stymied by the [=VXX199=].]]
* BioAugmentation: Ten years later, ordinary people can use the "M Process" to get perfect physical bodies.
* BrainComputerInterface: Many people have computer implants in their heads, allowing them to instantly download or receive information.
* BrainUploading: Inverted; when the "Will" A.I. is being attacked by the [=VXX199=], it uploads itself into Random's cybernetically-enhanced brain for safety.
* DividedStatesOfAmerica: After the fall of the Paideia, the United States is fractured into three countries -- Pan Cal (from the Rocky Mountains to the Pacific Ocean), Atlantia (everything east of the Mississippi river), and [=AgLand=] (everything else).
* EnforcedTechnologyLevels: Ten years later, humanity has evolved to a stereotypical {{Cyberpunk}} tech level, with {{Cyborg}}s, brain implants, and designer bodies. However, no countries have done any space development, and Earth orbit is cluttered with alien wreckage that no one has bothered to salvage. [[spoiler:This is due to manipulation by the alien [=VXX199=] to keep humanity planetbound for their ends.]]
* ExpendableClone: The superhumans who are attacking the Morituri are cloned in vats, making them a recurring menace.
* FingerFirearms: Tanaka Corporation employs techno-ninja {{Cyborg}}s with artificial hands that shoot flechettes.
* FlyingCar: Hovercars are ubiquitous in the future, while police and law enforcement use flying cars, cannons, and warships.
* FriendInTheBlackMarket: Random, Dan's friend in the Los Angeles criminal subculture. He conveniently has everything Dan needs, whether it's a head full of advanced cybernetics or resistance contacts who can help them escape.
* GutFeeling: Separated inside the [=VXX199=] spaceship, Yoko finds Dan simply by following her instincts.
* HearingVoices: Ten years after the dissolution of the Paideia, Scanner is haunted by psychic messages from the late Will Deguchi. [[spoiler:It's actually a BenevolentAI pretending to be Will]].
* HumanResources: The limited series reveals that [[spoiler:the [=VXX199=] were hiding behind the Moon, modifying mankind's culture to their requirements, then inducing [[SpontaneousHumanCombustion spontaneous combustion]] in the population to harness the psychic energies released.]]
* LifeEnergy: The [=VXX199=] feed off the psychic energy of intelligent creatures.
* MasterComputer: The [=VXX199=] are defeated by [[spoiler:having the Morituri damage its organic network enough for the BenevolentAI "Will" to take over]].
* MentalFusion: Dan, "Will", and the [=VXX199=] perform a mind merge, allowing Dan to learn the aliens' origins.
* SequelHook: The book ends with several sequel hooks: [[spoiler:the evolved Hordians on Mars]], an impending war between [[spoiler:Junzo Tanaka and Herman Stell]], and [[spoiler:the ruler of India, the Morituri assassin Zakir "Tiger" Shastri]].
* ShoutOut: Several times in the background, [[ComicStrip/CalvinAndHobbes a young boy with spiky blond hair and a striped shirt clutching a toy tiger]] can be seen.
* SpontaneousHumanCombustion: This happens to random people due to [[spoiler:psychic harvesting by the alien [=VXX199=].]]
* {{Technopath}}: Scanner had a neural jack installed in his head to give him limited control of machines.
* TransferableMemory: The clones attacking the Morituri use memory transfer to learn from the mistakes of their predecessors.
* WrapItUp[=/=]PostScriptSeason: The "Electric Undertow" miniseries is part-way between these tropes. The original series wasn't fully LeftHanging, but the ending was rushed and there were a lot of loose ends.

Peter B. Gillis and Brent Anderson worked on the first twenty issues of the comic, after which it was written by James Hudnall and drawn by Mark Bagley. The series ended after 31 issues, soon followed by a five-part limited series, ''Strikeforce Morituri: Electric Undertow''; it took place ten years later and served as a cyberpunk-flavored coda to clean up loose ends from the orginal series.
