* WeakButSkilled: For the pre-Duel Monsters era, he often slipped into this role because his opponents were more powerful than him (either physically, or by cheating). In the early Duel Monsters era, he is this trope as well as he is one of the few players who predominantly relies on tactics and magic cards (most notably shown in his trademark use of Kuriboh), whereas all his opponents are generally beatdown players who simply rely on getting their highest ATK ace on the field. It's not until his duel with Mai that he finally unveils a game-winning stat stick of his own in the form of Black Luster Soldier. Starting with Battle City, he gains much stronger aces such as Valkyrion and Slifer, transitioning more into a StrongAndSkilled position (much like Kaiba, who added more advanced tactics to his already strong beatdown deck).
