* BreakTheHaughty: The Season 3 finale is hard on her. [[spoiler:Her attempts to maintain/gather power blows up in her face. Upon hearing the Long Zii elders conspiring against her, she attempts to assassinate them, only for the SoleSurvivor of the attack, Kong Pak, to try to retaliate, forcing her new husband Li Yong to kill his brother in arms. The man Mai Ling loves thus abandons her and the tong, leaving her vulnerable to an attack by the Hop Wei, who nearly kill her. By the end of the episode, she's reduced to a crying mess, symbolically regressing into the frightened little girl that she tried so hard to leave behind. This is especially emphasized by her allowing herself to be comforted by Ah Sahm, who once again refers to her as Xiao Jing for the first time in a while.]]

* DragonLady: Her desire to avoid looking weak ever again makes her present herself as such. Ah Toy even notes how stereotypically "traditional" the Long Zii headquarters is during Mai Ling's ploy to enter business with the whites.

Added DiffLines:

* GuysSmashGirlsShoot: While they have yet to team up, one of the few times Mai Ling enters combat in Season 3 shows her effectively wielding a revolver, in sharp contrast to her close-quarters fighters older brother and her estranged husband.

Added DiffLines:

* EstablishingCharacterMoment: He's the first character in the series to be a physical match for Ah Sahm, with some subtle implications that he's not even trying to begin with during their first fight. Ah Sahm is noticeably shocked by just how little Li Yong takes their fight seriously.

Added DiffLines:

* EvenEvilHasLovedOnes: Subverted. He doesn't appear to like Lee all that much due to bringing trouble to his sister-in-law's bar, and is more than happy to send him back to Georgia when the chance presents itself. That said, his later conversation with Abigail makes it clear that he isn't entirely above threatening her himself, making it clear that it's only because of the connection to his late brother that she's spared from his wrath.

* HowTheMightyHaveFallen: When he returns in Season 3, he's in a deportation center but it's downplayed as he still carries a lot of dignity with him despite the situation. [[spoiler:The same can't be said for when he's shot and gets his blood poisoned, causing him to mentally collapse into senile episodes that send him into humiliating and deranged rants, even putting Young Jun's life as risk as a result. Because of this, he requests that Young Jun MercyKill him so he can die as the beloved and respected leader of the Hop Wei instead of a raving old man wandering the streets.]]

* EveryoneHasStandards:
** He finds Mai Ling's willingness to kill Ah Sahm, her own brother, [[KinslayingIsASpecialKindOfEvil shocking]], even though they are in rival tongs.
** He finds no humor in finding the now senile [[spoiler:Father Jun]] in a humiliating and compromising position, in strong contrast with his fellow Long Zii who are laughing and mocking the old man.

* WhatYouAreInTheDark: [[spoiler:When he finds Father Jun on the Long Zii's doorstep, ranting and raving without any pants and demanding that long-dead Long Zii show himself, Li Yong has a look of utter pity and concern. * CartwrightCurse: Ah Sahm's love life isn't exactly stable.
** His main LoveInterest throughout the first two seasons was Penny Blake. While he cared for her enough to even consider her the best thing he's found since coming to America, their relationship doesn't work due to Ah Sahm's gang affiliation and she ends up [[spoiler:sent to an insane asylum by Buckley]].
** He enters a relationship with Rosalita Vega, who runs a fighting pit that he frequented. [[spoiler:She ends up using him to enact revenge against a man running a tournament in Mexico who killed her family and stole her home, and ends up shot dead. Despite her manipulations, she genuinely cared for Ah Sahm and was apologetic for how she used him]].
** Ah Sahm falls in love with Yan Mi when she helps the Hop Wei print their counterfeit money. When she gets arrested for suspicion of her collaboration with the tong, Ah Sahm doesn't hesitate to cut a deal with the police to free her, and goes as far as to [[spoiler:get ready to fully abandon the Hop Wei and run away with Yan Mi. While she survives mostly unscathed, she's forced to flee San Francisco without Ah Sahm when he becomes too busy trying to save Mai Ling from Young Jun]].

* AmbiguousSituation: Ah Sahm comes to suspect that Young Jun plans to kill Yan Mi once she teaches Hop Wei hatchet men how to print counterfeit money. While Young Jun is distrustful of her, it's never fully confirmed. [[spoiler:Even then, her later arrest makes the possibility even more likely, causing Ah Sahm to panic and plan to flee San Francisco and abandon the Hop Wei]].

* ObfuscatingStupidity: When dealing with people outside of Chinatown, Chao deliberately plays up his accent and downplays his intelligence to make himself appear less important than he truly is. [[note]]Although considering the show's TranslationConvention it's hard to say if Chao deliberately plays up his accent or if that's just how he sounds when actually ''speaking'' English. For what it's worth, however, Hoon Lee himself has mentioned that he believes Chao plays it up.[[/note]]
