His grandfather, Wilhelm van Astrea, [[TheyDiedBecauseOfYou blamed Reinhard for her death]], causing their relationship to plummet, leaving only his father who still cared about him. Sadly, his relationship with his father gravely deteriorated as well. After he gained the aforementioned blessing, his father became an alcoholic, and gradually started to blame him for Theresia's death as well.]]

* BornWinner: Comes from a line of master swordsmen and was born with a blessing that lets him wish for more blessings which he can permanently keep with no limits on the number, whereas normal people are extremely lucky to be born with one, not to mention his inherited blessing as the sword saint. However, the series also somewhat deconstructs this aspect of him. Reinhard has multiple abilities and blessings that basically guarantee him victory in any conflict no matter the odds, but he is [[DeusExitMachina often absent or unable to intervene]] in the deadly situations that Subaru encounters, and whenever he ''does'' show up, it's usually after somebody has already perished [[note]] usually Subaru [[/note]] and he cannot restore the dead back to life, only being able to obliterate the threat that caused so much death to prevent further harm. Subaru's [[SaveScumming unique power]] allows him to pre-empt deadly situations and make it out with minimal loss of life, but Reinhard can only ever appear ''after'' a large crisis has happened that requires the power of an almighty hero to be stopped. This is noted by several characters in the ArcWords that appear around Reinhard, that he has the power to protect everybody, but cannot actually ''save'' anyone, especially those he is close to, and his sheer overwhelming power actually alienates him from many, including his own family due to the circumstances in which he inherited the blessing of the Sword Saint.

* ArchEnemy: Is unknowingly this for Subaru, and after losing everything that he love by the former's actions, it becomes [[ItsPersonal personal]] on Reinhard's end.

* LonelyAtTheTop: For all his blessings he has very few friends, and him inheriting the blessing of the Sword Saint also caused a massive rift between himself and his family. WordOfGod states that this is averted in the [[AlternateUniverse Ayamatsu If]] continuity...until [[RevengeByProxy Subaru works his magic.]] In the present storyline, it's implied that Subaru is something of an OnlyFriend to him, as in his ignorance of Reinhard's capabilities during their first meeting in arc 1, he treated him as an equal and compatriot, which few if any have actually done towards the Sword Saint. Even after becoming aware of how absurdly powerful Reinhard actually is, Subaru nonetheless is determined to become an outstanding knight who can "do the things that [Reinhard] can't do" as a rival knight in the Royal Selection, pleasing Reinhard that there is somebody out there who actually believes [[IJustWantToBeNormal he does have limits like an ordinary person]].

* BigDamnHeroes: In the "bad timelines" Subaru dies, like when [[spoiler:Puck]] goes on a RoaringRampageOfRevenge for [[spoiler:Emilia's]] death, Reinhard arrives shortly thereafter to defeat whatever killed Subaru and subsequently save the world from that particular threat.

* {{Foil}}: To Subaru. Reinhard is an example of the overpowered main character archetype that plagues stories of this genre and was written to contrast Subaru's lack of protagonist abilities and potential. Both have extremely overpowered abilities, but Reinhard's allows him to solve every problem by himself, while Subaru has to consistently borrow the powers of his friends to get things done. However, the contrasting ''nature'' of their abilities means that whilst Reinhard can only every resolve crisis situations ''after'' the threat has appeared and caused an immense loss of life, Subaru can preemptively "save" those who are endangered and prevent their demise, something which Reinhard clearly wishes he were capable of. Likewise, both have problems with their families, but Subaru manages to resolve them, while Reinhard's problems continue to get worse. Reinhead's family (his father and Grandfather) have become split into following one of the three throne candidates save Emilia, putting them in opposition to him in the Royal Selection, and despite attempts to patch things up between Reinhard and Wilhelm in arc 5 with Subaru's prompting to the elderly swordsman, [[spoiler:Reinhard cutting down the resurrected form of Theresa during the battle with the Witch Cult and refusing to see that it was anything more than a mindless corpse soldier of the enemy, despite her [[DyingAsYourself regaining her sense of self after the mortal blow]]]], shatters Wilhelm's relationship with him even further and results in him becoming extremely frosty in demeanour towards his Grandson, as opposed to Subaru forming a closer bond to both the elder and younger Astras throughout the ordeal.

* DeliberatelyDistressedDamsel: When Subaru first meets her, Priscilla is being harassed by the same thugs who tried to mug him at the start of the series. However, Priscilla was never in danger as she's powerful enough to defend herself from some muggers and she simply let herself be dragged to the alley because she thought it could amuse her.

* RedAndBlackAndEvilAllOver: Subverted. She most frequently wears an opulent black and red aristocratic dress. She's the most unpleasant of the royal candidates, but definitely isn't not evil.

* {{Jerkass}}: She thinks she's best suited for ruling Lugunica, frequently insulting and mocking the other candidates nonchalantly.
