** His attempt to unleash the [[{{BFG}} Royal Drum Crown 7-Shot Bliking Cannon]] on Luffy during their fight doesn't quite go as he intended: the cannon has not been maintained for months and its mechanism has frozen due to the castle gate being constantly open. As if to add insult to injury, a bird has built its nest inside the barrel. Even Luffy finds the development hysterical.
** [[spoiler:Pure bad luck leaves him stumbling upon the secret of [[ShadowDictator Imu sitting on the Empty Throne]], [[HeKnowsTooMuch a secret that is]] ''[[HeKnowsTooMuch inevitably]]'' [[HeKnowsTooMuch fatal to everyone who discovers it]]. He's now a hunted fugitive.]]

* UnderestimatingBadassery: He threatens and insults Shanks more than once, believing to deal with a weakling while any rookie of the Red Hair pirates could kill him and all his men without any effort, let alone their captain.

* KnowWhenToFoldEm: Once he realizes that he's no match for Shanks and his crew, he takes Luffy as hostage and flees.

* UnderestimatingBadassery: He threatens and insults Shanks more than once. For reference, any rookie of the Red Hair pirates could kill him and all his men without any effort, let alone their captain.

* NoListeningSkills: Stelly's first instinct upon learning about the Empty Throne is to develop an overwhelming desire to sit upon it in order to, in his warped logic, become king of the entire world, completely missing the point of the Empty Throne even though an attendant from the World Government is telling him exactly why no one is meant to sit there, [[spoiler:not knowing about Imu ]].

** [[HeKnowsTooMuch Pure bad luck leaves him stumbling upon the secret of [[spoiler:Imu sitting on the Empty Throne]], a secret that is ''inevitably'' fatal to everyone who discovers it. He's now a hunted fugitive.]]

** His reaction to learning of Imu is basically "Oh God Please Help Me I Don't Wanna Die" while going on the run.

* {{Jerkass}}: Aside from being a bandit and an assassin, and proud of that, once Shanks tells him that he and his crew have finished the sake, save for a bottle that he offers to Higuma, the latter smashes the bottle on Shanks's head. He also hits Luffy, a kid, multiple times and attempts to kill him by kicking him into the water.

* FamilyOfChoice: Zeff is Sanji's father by everything but blood because Sanji chooses him to be. More poignant when we meet Sanji's horrifically abusive, cruel biological father Vinsmoke Judge who believes Sanji to be the broken failure of his four sons. When Sanji stands up to Judge, he makes it firmly clear that Zeff is the only father he acknowledges.

* SoleSurvivor: Zeff is the only survivor of his old crew when the storm took their ship, and sacrificed his leg to save Sanji from starvation.

* SoleSurvivor: Along with Nami, who was a baby at the time, they're the only survivors from their initial hometown after a pirate attack. They're found by Belle-Mère who adopts them.

* ActionMom: She's adoptive mother of Nami and Nojiko and she ''was'' a Marine. She even manages to knock Arlong back and stick a gun in his face. Unfortunately, Arlong isn't an ordinary opponent.

* DefiantToTheEnd: Not one ounce of fear from her toward Arlong. She refuses to back down and willingly gives her life for her girls.

* DyingDeclarationOfLove: Belle-Mère's final words, right before she's shot, are to tell her daughters she loves them very much.

* GoOutWithASmile: Belle-Mere gives a smile when she proclaims her love for her girls, just before Arlong shoots her in the head.
* GoodParents: She's an unorthodox mother but she tried to do right by her girls (including a time when she was so broke, she lived off of tangerines for a month just so Nami and Nojiko could have a more rounded diet).

* HeroicSacrifice: When Arlong came to Cocoyashi village, he demanded a tax to of 50.000 beries for each child and 100.000 for each adult. Since Belle-Mere had only 100.000 beries, she hid her daughters and pretended to live alone. Unfortunately, Nojiko and Nami were found and, since her money were enough for either herself or her daughters, Belle-Mere choosed the latter and was shot to death.

* RedheadInGreen: She's a red head who wore a green, plaid t-shirt.

* InconsistentSpelling: Bellemere? Belle-Mère? Bell-Mère?

* TakeMeInstead: Belle-Mère's savings were enough to either save herself or her two girls from Arlong's crew. She chose to save her daughters instead of herself.

* TrademarkFavoriteFood: PlayedForDrama. Belle Mere eats mostly tangerines, which she uses in all of her recipes, because she has a tangerine farm and is very poor. She gives Nami and Nojiko healthy meals while she mostly eats her own tangerines.

* HappilyMarried: It's clear that he loves his wife dearly, when he tells Kuma about her passing, he tries to smile through the immense grief he's feeling, saying she's in a better place.

* TakeMeInstead: When World Government agents arrest his family, he begs for his wife at least to be left alone, since she's just a normal human.

* WideEyedIdealist: Despite his harrowing enslavement and the tragedies he's experienced, he remains optimistic and tries to maintain a positive outlook, this stems from his faith in the Nika legend.

* AnimalMotif: Sheep. Has a sheep-like hairstyle and, like sheep, he's nice and loyal to Kaya. Even his ship, which he gives to the Straw Hats, is sheep-themed.

* SecretKeeper: Who would've guessed that he'd be one of the very few people to know the darkest secret of the World Government? Except now that makes him a ''loose end.''

* CharacterDeath: It's not confirmed, but there is no mention of him walking away from the battle at sea with Kuma, strongly implying that Kuma did not spare him when he destroyed Bekori's ships and army and even the kind preacher-king's patience had its limits.
* {{Determinator}}: The guy will just not give up trying to reconquer the Sorbet Kingdom, to the point Kuma is stunned at his utter inability to cut his losses.

* DirtyCoward: In spite of his arrogance, when he learned how strong Blackbeard's crew was, Wapol ''took his army and ran'' rather than fight them, leaving his country defenseless. Vivi is appalled when she hears this.

* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Zeff is rudely blunt and doesn't hesitate to lay the smackdown on Sanji, even when he was still a kid, but he truly does care for Sanji, and cries when Sanji leaves to join the Straw Hats. Zeff rejoices with the other cooks when he learns of Sanji's first bounty.
