The Sound Five are Orochimaru's squad of personal bodyguards. They first appear during the Chunin Exam arc, where they prevent anyone from interfering with Orochimaru's fight with the Third Hokage. Their main appearance, though, is in the Sasuke Retrieval arc, where they are sent to escort Sasuke to Orochimaru's lair and serve as the antagonists of the arc. Each of them fights one of the members of the Retrieval team, and all of them are dead by the end of the arc.

Each of them possesses a Cursed Seal, which allows them to [[OneWingedAngel transform into more powerful forms]] during battle.

Kimimaro however, is somewhat less of a jerk than the others and the least sadistic.
* KilledOffForReal: All of them, despite all being young and in the manga, were never resurrected with Kabuto's Edo Tensei aside from Kimimaro.
* MalevolentMaskedMen: In their first appearance, when they're using the Combination Transformation to hide as Rasa's bodyguards. The anime also implies it was them disguised as the teammates of Shiore (the grass ninja Orochimaru impersonated) during the second phase of the chūnin exams, one of whom was wearing an actual mask.
* MysteriousPast: Aside from Kimimaro, most of which comes from [[AdaptationExpansion the anime]], we know nothing about their early lives. All we're shown in the anime is that the core four members were prisoners of Orochimaru's and were forced to fight with other prisoners in a battle royale that would determine who got to be his bodyguards.
* ObviouslyEvil: When they're in their default appearance, they don't look particularly good or evil. But when they activate the second stage of the cursed seal, they play this straight.
* OneWingedAngel: Courtesy of the Curse Mark. Kimimaro has one that's stronger than the others.

The transformation boosts their physical parameters even further giving them enhanced usage of their jutsu.

* QuirkyMinibossSquad: They have unique looks, personalities, and powers, and were also empowered with Orochimaru's Cursed Seal, making them much stronger than your average rogue ninja. They also were close to killing the members of Kohona 11 before the Sand Siblings interfered.
* SoreLoser: In the anime after Kimimaro [[CurbStompBattle defeats them]] it takes them a while to follow his orders.
* SummonMagic: All of them except for Kimimaro have a summoning technique (though Jirōbō's is only in the anime).
* TeensAreMonsters: They're all only 14-15 years old and very sadistic and merciless towards their opponents.
* TotalPartyKill: The Sound Four are wiped out delivering Sasuke Uchiha to Orochimaru in the end, though they ultimately succeed in their mission.
* TrashTalk: They are ''very'' fond of calling their opponents trash. Even Kimimaro, despite his calm and otherwise polite speech, refers to Naruto and his Shadow Clone army as shadow clones as "scattered garbage" that needs to be cleaned up. Tayuya's badmouthing extends to her own teammates, especially Jirōbō.
* VillainForgotToLevelGrind: An anime example that is justified. After they're brought back to life via Kabuto's Edo Tensei, the Sound Four end up encountering the Sasuke Retrieval Team that they fought three years back. But unlike before when they had the heroes on the ropes for most of their fight (and for Kiba and Shikamaru's case, bailed out by the Sand Siblings), it's a CurbStompBattle against them because the heroes have gotten much stronger within those three years, having their fair share of scraps against far more dangerous opponents like the Akatsuki. It was only thanks to Kabuto's enhancements that they were able to gain the upper hand, only to be swiftly defeated by Naruto.
* VitriolicBestBuds: Their relationship with each other is rather volatile, though they still have powerful collaboration techniques when the situation calls for it.
* WorfHadTheFlu: A group of powerful shinobi, they are only defeated by the Sasuke Retrieval Team (mostly composed of genin) because they were hurt and exhausted after their battle with Genma and Raido. On top of that, Sakon and Ukon, and Tayuya had the misfortune of fighting the freshly arrived Sand Siblings just as they were about to win against their opponents.
* YoungerThanTheyLook: Believe it or not, they are FOURTEEN. Except for Kimimaro who is fifteen. They only look their age in the stock photos we use. It doesn't help that they all have very mature voices in the anime.

The big guy. He's constantly berating Tayuya for her foul mouth. The most physically powerful member of the five, but the weakest overall when considering all abilities combined. He hates being called fat but calls Choji fat constantly in their battle -- [[HypocriticalHumor go figure]].

He knows lots of Earth-Style jutsu and taijutsu plus he can eat other peoples' chakra to strengthen himself. His Cursed Seal form makes him bigger and tougher.

He has Choji on the ropes for most of their fight, but Choji uses a DeadlyUpgrade and kills him in one punch.

* BaldOfEvil: Not completely, though he's lacking in hair nonetheless. He grows a large amount of hair in the second stage of his cursed seal.

Kidōmaru is a spider-esque guy with four extra arms. [[AmbiguouslyBrown Is sort of dark skinned]]. He does whatever a spider can... and more. He can produce both regular webs and golden ones which instantly harden to become harder than steel. In the Japanese version, he always talks as if battles are some sort of RealTimeStrategy game. He's a good strategist, though -- he's able to determine Neji's weakness merely by watching him fight for a while.

He can instantly forge weapons using his webs, including a bow-and-arrow with tremendous destructive potential. He has a personal summon; a spider who can instantly create hundreds of smaller ones. His Cursed Seal form makes him even more spiderlike and gives him another eye.

He nearly kills Neji, but Neji manages to turn the tables on him at the last minute.

* LetsFightLikeGentlemen: During his fight with Rock Lee, Lee stops him for a few moments by... telling him to wait and let him take his medicine, as he had just recovered from major surgery. Kimimaro ''abides.''

One of the many prisoners of Orochimaru's that he keeps under lock and key in his hideout. Upon his current body being wrecked beyond repair and with Sasuke still not at the Sound Village, Kabuto has the prisoners kill each other in a BattleRoyale with the winner being promised his freedom. Needless to say, "freedom" here is defined by becoming the next host of Orochimaru, of which Gen'yūmaru is the "lucky winner". His body would serve as Orochimaru's vessel until his ill-fated attempt to claim Sasuke as his own.

* ArcherArchetype: His Spider War Bow: Terrible Shot allows him to create a bow and arrows out of his Spider Sticky Gold. He also fits the intellectual aspects and is a composed fighter but like everyone in the group, he is an unrepentant sadist.

* InvincibleVillain: He is ''never'' defeated throughout his appearances. He easily defeats the Sound Four in a Flashback and a thousand Naruto shadow clones powered up by the Nine-Tails chakra. Lee while drunk manages to catch him off-guard, but when he activates his Level One Cursed Seal, he quickly turns the tables. While Gaara nearly buries him alive, his Level Two Cursed Seal allows him to break free, and he is on the verge of killing both Gaara and Lee, when his illness finally does him in. After he gets revived by the Edo Tensei, he easily fights of a Squadron of Samurai, and even a Naruto shadow clone who mastered the Nine-Tails' chakra wasn't enough to keep him down. Only when the Edo Tensei ends, he finally dies for good.

In an anime filler flashback, Kimimaro tells the Sound Four to submit to him or die, and ridicules them as being “pathetic” after he defeats them.

* TheAce: Considered to be the strongest of Orochimaru's subordinates until Sasuke came along, and was viewed as a suitable vessel for Orochimaru had it not been for his fatal illness. Kabuto even noted that Orochimaru's botched invasion of the Hidden Leaf would've turned out differently if Kimmimaro had partken in the fighting. He was also the leader of the Sound Five, having defeated the rest of the Sound Four to establish his leadership. Unlike his teammates, he doesn't get defeated by an opponent but by his own illness. During the war arc, he was one of the few Edo Tensei zombies who did not get sealed by Allied Shinobi Forces, even holding his own against a Naruto shadow clone that mastered the Nine-Tail's chakra.
