A discreet yet determined student whose Quirk, "Tail", manifests as a thick, prehensile [[ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin tail]] which he can use as a third limb. He is also skilled at martial arts and has a deep sense of honor, but often struggles to stand out among his classmates, a fact he's himself is very aware of.

* AnimalMotifs: Monkeys, due to a mix of his tail and martial arts prowess. In the U.A. Sports Festival Arc, Shinso mockingly compares him to one and he's depicted as one in a piece of side art that portrayed all of Class 1-A (except Bakugo) as animals.
* BareFistedMonk: Unlike others whose fighting styles are based entirely on their Quirks, Ojiro fights using martial arts in combination with his tail for fast and acrobatic moves. His epithet is even "The Martial Arts Hero".
* BattleAmongstTheFlames: During the USJ battle, he was among the students warped to the fire disaster simulator. He's seen still easily dispatching some low-level villains after All Might punches the Nomu sky-high.
* BoringButPractical: His Quirk is as simple as it gets, to the point that it is used as an explanation for Quirk Factors in Chapter 135: a sturdy tail that can be used for attacking, movement or as a third arm. Very useful, but not exactly flashy.
* CharacterTics: In the manga, wagging his tail when excited.
* ColorMotif: White. The "Jiro" in his last name means White in Japanese, and his hero costume is White.
* FastballSpecial: He and Ida perform one in the anime when fighting Power Loader. With Ojiro's tail wrapped around his leg, Ida launches him at high speed towards the goal.

* NiceGuy: Ojiro has also been shown to be very sweet and humble, as he is a very caring and empathetic person when it comes to the emotions and well-being of other people. A good example of this is during the Sports Festival, where he's visibly guilty about turning down Midoriya's request to team-up during the cavalry battle thanks to having so many points. He then informs him of Shinso's [[MindControl Brainwashing]] in the following round to make it up to him.
* NonUniformUniform: His school uniform pants and gym pants are custom-tailored with an opening for his tail. Additionally, he wears white sneakers instead of the usual brown dress shoes that are worn by almost all the other students.
* OutOfFocus: Stemming from his status as TheGenericGuy, Ojiro doesn't get much attention in regards to character development or unique combat techniques (having a fairly basic Quirk with some athletic moves and martial arts), and winds up being underutilized beyond a few scattered moments of attention, and isn't very prominent in movies and [=OVAs=].
* PhraseCatcher: Other students are always commenting on how plain/ordinary everything he does is.
* PrehensileTail: His Quirk gives him a thick, strong tail that he uses as an extra limb while doing martial arts.

* SpinAttack: During the Joint Training Arc, he demonstrates that he took this kind of attack as a specialty along with his trademark TailSlap. He's now capable of spinning his tail so hard it generates a [[BlowYouAway gust of wind]] strong enough to send his opponents flying.

* UnusuallyUninterestingSight: He seems completely unfazed by Denki regularly twiddling with his tail, especially its fluffy end.

* CharacterTics: Whenever he's around Ojiro, he tends to pet and fiddle with his tail, to which Ojiro pays no mind.
* ChekhovsGunman: He serves as this in the FinalBattle of the ''Heroes Rising'' movie. [[spoiler:Deku and Bakugo had been severely injured by Nine's devastating lightning attack in a previous fight. With all the action and chaos of the final battle it's easy to overlook the fact that Kaminari hasn't made an appearance despite everyone else pushing themselves to their absolute limits to defeat the villains. It eventually transpires that this is because Kaminari was hiding in wait the entire time for Nine to unleash another lightning attack so he could absorb it, which allows Deku and Bakugo keep fighting]].
* ChivalrousPervert: While he has no problem with ogling the girls or joining in Mineta's cheerleading joke, he won't go as far as Mineta. He acts very differently with Jiro, as he doesn't include her in his maid fantasy.
* CivvieSpandex: His hero costume is not very different from Jiro's, favoring a trendy look over any sort of practicality. He gets a few gadgets later, but he still looks relatively casual. According to supplementary materials, they were made by the same designer, so this may have been intentional on the designer's part.
* CoolShades: His second hero costume includes a blue-tinted pair. According to supplementary materials, they update him with info on the location of his flying projectiles.
* CowardlyLion: Spends the first stage of the provisional hero license exam thoroughly freaked out by [[BodyHorror Seiji Shishikura's Quirk]], but after Shishikura insults his classmates one too many times, Kaminari [[LetsGetDangerous finally goes on the offense]]. ** While in the remedial class during the Forest Training Camp Arc, he's seen drawing Aizawa on a piece of paper. It's fairly well done, indicating he has some drawing skills.
** While he doesn't have much book smarts, he's proven to be a pretty good, if not great, field strategist. When he, Tsuyu, Kirishima, Koda, and Shinso are facing off against Class 1-B, he's the one that comes up with the match-winning plan.
* HormoneAddledTeenager: Downplayed. He has clearly displayed an interest in all things sexual and will sometimes join Mineta in his lewd attempts at ogling the girls in their changing rooms or in their bikinis but, unlike Mineta who ''craves'' the nasty, Denki knows where to draw the line.

Notably in ''My Hero: One's Justice 2'', Kaminari is the only one to benefit from having Mineta as a sidekick, which in general is based on canon relationships.
* RequiredSecondaryPowers: He has to be resistant to his own electricity so he won't kill himself while using his Quirk, but overusing it will fry his brain for an hour. It also immensely helps [[spoiler:if he has to act like a lightning rod just like what he did against Nine's thunder]].

* ShipTease: With Jiro. Kaminari makes her flustered when he praises her for music skills. Later when Midnight tells him to think of the most important person to him during the Liberation War to gather courage, Jiro is the person who comes up and encourages him.
* ShockAndAwe: At first, he's not quite good at controlling it and just "wears" lighting and can discharge it in short bursts. Meaning at best he just acts as a taser and this means having to actually get up close to his targets. If he goes all out, he risks hitting allies as well as enemies. As of Chapter 107, however, he's received equipment from Hatsume and Power Loader that lets him [[TookALevelInBadass extend the range and precision of his Quirk, allowing him to target enemies from a distance]].
* ShooOutTheClowns: Not him, exactly, but his dumb mode. In the early arcs of the series, it would appear quite frequently to provide levity, but it's no coincidence that he finally gets some proper aiming gear and stops overloading himself right before the Overhaul arc plunges the story into its most serious tone yet. Tellingly, he's completely serious when he takes to the field in the Liberation War arc and gets knocked out legitimately instead of dumbing down again.
* SlasherSmile: He's actually capable of giving very scary ones whenever he feels he may get the upper hand in a fight, especially whenever he's about to discharge his electric attack.

* TookALevelInBadass: While his Quirk was recognized as very strong from the get go, its limited control and problematic drawbacks made his usefulness very limited, not helped by the fact that he was not very bright either. By the time of the Provisional Hero License Exam Arc, he is way more careful about his voltage limit and has gotten equipment specifically to help with long-range attacks. During the training matches against Class 1-B, he also shows a more tactical approach to the situation, showing his strategic growth as well.

* UnskilledButStrong: His Quirk is strong enough to electrocute a whole army, as shown in the USJ incident. Unfortunately, he temporarily becomes a vegetable once he uses his Quirk at his fullest, and needed a tool to help him control it.

Kirishima was actually trying to be careful, serious, and stick to Tsuyu's battle plan in the simulation, but Tetsutetsu is a LeeroyJenkins already treating the training as if it were real and not getting caught up in self-pity]].
** On a more positive note, [[spoiler:his backstory reveals that he once saw Gigantomachia threatening his classmates, and was frozen in fear and unable to bring himself to intervene. Cut to the Meta Liberation Army arc, and not only is he the one to ultimately pull off the plan to put Gigantomachia out of the fight, but he saves Mina's life by diving in and throwing her out of harms way right before being crushed under Gigantomachia's giant hand]].

* MythicalMotifs: The fantasy-themed third anime ending depicts Kirishima as a big red dragon serving as Bakugo's steed.
* NiceGuy: One of the most genuinely kind characters in the series. He's the only one who tries to befriend Bakugo and he attempts to break the tension when Todoroki declares Midoriya a rival. He's the first student to try to check All Might's condition after his fight with Nomu and immediately goes to comfort Tsuyu when she's feeling guilty, and even tries to comfort and give advice to a villain who just shot Kirishima's senpai and Kirishima himself. The result of the entrance examination also shows him with the fourth-highest Rescue Points of the results, just behind Midoriya, Uraraka, and Class 1-B's Kendo.
* NightmareFace: In Chapter 134 [[spoiler:when he turns his Quirk up a notch. The facial crenelations that usually come with activation of his Quirk intensify and ''extend onto his eyeballs'', his irises become polygonal, his hands are transformed into talons, and his mouth becomes a distended, lipless maw]].
* NoSell: During his fight with Bakugo at the U.A. Sports Festival, he shrugs off his opponent's first attack. However, as the fight goes on Kirishima's Quirk becomes less and less effective, so Bakugo's blasts ultimately do the trick.

Kirishima's training focused on increasing the defensive capabilities of his Quirk by making his body harder, while Tetsutetsu's training has focused on making his Quirk more resistant so he can charge without worry. Kirishima's insecurities have become more prevalent as time goes on, while Tetsutetsu is more focused on hero work than self-doubt.
* ObliviousToLove: In ''Manga/MyHeroAcademiaSmash'', Jiro starts noticing his muscular physique and good looks and starts developing a crush on him. Kirishima, however, barely notices any hints of attraction, gets distracted by Bakugo and tries to hang out with him instead. The narration reveals that Kirishima had no idea why Jiro refused to talk to him for the next couple of days. In the canonical series, he seems uninterested in love and romance as he looks rather exasperated when Kaminari starts flirting with Mei Hatsume.

While Bakugo is more focused on [[TheBerserker destroying his opponent on sight]]. He could also be Red as he is more [[TheHeart extroverted and more boisterous]] outside of hero work. Whereas Bakugo can be seen surprisingly as TheAloner. With Kaminari, Kirishima is usually the one with the more common sense of the two and Kaminari is a tad more excitable and impulsive.
* RequiredSecondaryPowers: Skin hardening gives him a great defense and hardened fists means his punches will hurt, but he has to ''get'' there first. As a result, he works out the most in his class, besides maybe Bakugo, to get a HeroicBuild so he can muscle his way into close range, otherwise he has to depend on help from someone else to boost his mobility.
