* ProfessionalKillers: He became a career killer to survive after the sudden death of his parents. More specifically, a member of HIT - Homicide International Trust. That is, until they betray him. As for his sister, he shielded her from that life by going as far as to hide their family ties from her so that she grew up without knowing him. Unfortunately, HIT took her hostage, leading to his siege on the organization.

* ArchEnemy: Shares the role with Dr. Zito. While Zito tries to outwit Mac's ingenuity, Murdoc likes to either play mind games or go right for increasingly-aggressive straightforward attacks.

* DeviousDaggers: Murdock is an assassin that is well-versed in many weapons, including knives. In one episode, he is meeting with members of his organization and is [[ExtendedDisarming forced to leave his weapons behind.]] After a metal detector catches him trying to keep one on his person, he is seemingly completely disarmed, and the heads of his group ask him what makes him think he can finish off [=MacGyver=] when he's failed in the past. Murdock produces a knife that he was still carrying, and says that, unlike Mac, he cheats.

* ArchEnemy: Shares this role with Murdoc, due to having multiple appearances where he's intent on testing Mac's intelligence against his own in some kind of twisted death game.

* BerserkButton: He's really good at restraining his temper, but confirmed topics of strong dislike are all forms of crime like drugs, child abuse, firearms, senseless wars, anything paranormal (he doesn't show any outward religiosity for being a subscriber to a Darwin magazine). The one single moment in all 7 seasons where he almost lost it completely was when an anti-drug activist friend of his, Booker, was murdered by way of the "Columbian Necktie" and he came this close to killing the murderer, a white supremacist, [[BatmanGrabsAGun with a gun no less!]]
