While Lely was a monster responsible for unjustifiable atrocities, the game gives him some slight humanizing qualities through his tragic past, relationship with Klaasje and his lack of joy in his crimes, instead preferring [[PragmaticVillainy ruthless pragmatism]]. Koertenaer, however, actually does take sadistic pleasure in the war crimes he committed and admits Lely would likely only kill one person in retribution for the lynching of a soldier to [[MakeAnExampleOfThem serve as example]] as opposed to [[spoiler:Koertenaer and his subordinates plan to go on a mindless killing spree as a "Retaliation Strike"]].

Hoenkloewn is a racist PsychoForHire who keeps a KillTally on his helmet and on a previous tour fired mortars at random coordinates in the hopes of hitting villages for fun.
