** ''The Ember Island Players'' shows that extremists like him fuel the propaganda of the Fire Nation, which does not shy away from his atrocity and in fact uses his brief chemistry with Katara to demonize her as well.

* SatelliteFamilyMember: She is important to the story because she sacrificed herself to save Katara's life when Katara was a little girl. Every mention of her is related to Katara's (and occasionally Sokka's) grief and the consequences of her death. Katara was forced to grow up early and take on her mother's role in the family, resulting in her being the TeamMom for her friends. In Book 3, Zuko helps Katara track down Kya's murderer, which causes her to forgive him and accept him as a friend.
* SmallRoleBigImpact: Her sacrifice not only saved her daughter's life, but made it possible for said daughter to free the Avatar several years later. This directly led to the end of the war.

Trope does not apply unless the show says that the Jerkass Has A Point.

* JerkassHasAPoint: While him and his village turning on Zuko and driving him out after he defended them does seem harsh, Zuko did so while declaring himself the proud crown prince of the nation whose invasions had driven their village to poverty and ruin and possibly gotten his older brother killed. Zuko is also the reason for Lee's capture, as Lee was captured for pulling a knife on some soldiers, and said knife was given to him by Zuko.

* JerkassHasAPoint: Trying to kill Zei and the Gaang was going too far, but it's hard not to see where he's coming from; they ''did'' break into his library, lie to his face, and try to steal information to do exactly the thing he said they were going to do after he gave them free run of the place in good faith. While the Fire Nation absolutely ''does'' need to be stopped, he's also right in pointing out that everyone, Fire Nation included, believes that they're on the "right" side of any war. Notably, nobody ever gives a good ''counter'' to this argument (such as pointing out that they've already committed two genocides and came close to committing a third). And even if they did bring it up, they just established themselves as flagrant, unabashed liars so he has no reason to trust their claims.

The trope page says: "Violence to teenagers, with the exception of some of those in their early teens, isn't an example either since teenagers are physically stronger than children and lack the "completely defenseless" element, especially if Teens Are Monsters. * SmallRoleBigImpact: If he had simply killed Zhao by surprise when he had the chance, he would've been the successor to the throne, and Unalaq would've never obtained power. In addition, on a much smaller scale, if he had taken Zhao out, Iroh would likely have taken command of the siege, and he certainly would never have allowed the Moon Spirit to come to harm, meaning Yue would still be alive and would have come to power after her father's passing instead.
