he is somewhat of a main character.
* ButtMonkey: Frequently. Notably:
** During a prank where Hayley and Klaus convinced
Steve after Lewis is fired as payback he was lucid dreaming, Hayley calls Snot and asks him out. [[BrickJoke At the end of the episode]], he shows up for treating them poorly. Her abuse leads the date with a limo and tux, claiming that to pay for it he had to sell ''all'' of his toys. Cue Hayley slamming the door in his face.
** Thought he had lost his virginity to his new girlfriend. It was actually Roger in disguise, and due
to Roger rigging lacking female sexual organs, he used a stress ball to "simulate" the experience.
** His family life is a wreck. His father died and showed Snot had a strained relationship that made him not care about him. His mother is frequently doing weird stuff. And his uncle opted for suicide just because the boy band with potential he had lacked one more member over another band that had a member more than them (after Snot told

them.
* EarlyInstallmentWeirdness: He was originally implied to have come from money, being able to afford lavish presents in an attempt to win over Haley. Later episodes make a joke about him being quite poor.
* EmbarrassingFirstName: Schmuley.
* {{Flanderization}}: By season 14, Snot's poor background is taken to the extreme; he and his mother can't afford pencils for school, actual pillows for their beds, cheap fast food for dinner, or even real furniture for their house.
* HeCleansUpNicely: After Snot supposedly lost his virginity to "Jenny" (actually Roger) and usurped leadership from Steve, he started wearing better clothes and combing his hair. After Roger faked "Jenny's" death, he reverted [[StatusQuoIsGod back to his usual look]].
* HeterosexualLifePartners: With Steve. The two are repeatedly shown to be extremely close (even beyond Steve's friendships with Barry and Toshi) and are usually there for each other.
* HiddenDepths: One episode had Stan wear braces on his teeth which gave him a ''very'' awkward-sounding lisp. Upon finding this out, Snot has an exasperated reaction to this and loosens a screw in the braces with a conventional screwdriver while griping about why they're always screwed in so tight. This is enough to remove the lisp.
* HopelessSuitor: Has had an unrequited crush on Hayley for apparently quite a long time.
%%* JewishAndNerdy
* NoodleIncident: One time he and Steve investigated the mystery of the disappearance of his bicycle, but they dropped it after the case turned into a double rape homicide.
* PermaStubble: Like many teenagers.
* TooKinkyToTorture: Coincides with SingleTargetSexuality, where whenever Hayley specifically beats the crap out of him, he considers it the greatest honor of his life.
* StrongFamilyResemblance: Aside from the different hair color, PermaStubble, and acne, Snot looks a lot like his mother.
* WantingIsBetterThanHaving: Finally lands a date with Hailey in "The Missing Kink". And immediately loses interest in her... Only for the show to imply that he's [[StatusQuoIsGod gone back to obsessing over her]].
* WithFriendsLikeThese: Snot turns on Steve a lot, like stealing his girlfriend and throwing an apple at him when he had his scoliosis brace on. Snot himself has suffered from some of Steve's schemes in turn.

Steve's lovably dumb friend

Even with his usual "simpleton" demeanor, he occasionally slips out a psychopathic thought or two.

principal into getting shot, then twists his finger in the wound to give him even more pain.
* LivingProp: BitchInSheepsClothing: An odd example in that the friendly demeanor is genuine, but only because of the medication suppressing his evil urges.
%%* TheChessmaster
* CreepyUncle: He has one of those who made "basement movies" with him.
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: Normally, Barry takes drugs that dampen his criminal mind. As a result, he is naive and slow, and struggles making moral choices.
* ContinuityNod: Since the episode where his condition was revealed up through Season 6, he would semi-frequently say and do dark or disturbing things even when sedated. For example, he once got revenge on Lewis by letting him get shot and then twisting his finger in the wound. Another time, while he, Snot, and Toshi were beating Steve, he suddenly shouts his desire to kill his whole family.
* DepravedHomosexual: Barry has a crush on Snot, and things get awkward when they're alone in a car in "Independent Movie."
* DisabilitySuperpower: Barry is shown to be impossibly good with numbers.
* EvilBrit: When off his medication, he is a dangerous psychopath and talks with a British accent.
* EvilRedhead: Has a full head of red hair and is psychopathic.
* FatBastard: When off his medication (even for a small amount of time), he tries to ruin Stan and Francine's marriage just to mess with Steve.
* FatBestFriend: The token heavyset member of Steve's friends.
* FauxAffablyEvil: When off his meds he effects a calm, polite manner of speaking at times.
* GentleGiant: {{Subverted}}. Barry is usually portrayed as a silly but kind chubby boy, but that's because he is under the effects of a medication that represses his violent impulses. Once he skips his dose, he turns into an evil genius that even Stan is scared of.
* GoodIsDumb: Subverted. Barry seems to be the dumbest and most docile of Steve and his friends, but this is only because of his medication.
His design shows up in later episodes following true personality is far more malicious and intelligent.
* HypocriticalHumor: In most episodes, Barry is not ashamed to point out that he's overweight, apparently he ''does'' however have a problem with people who are obese and overweight.
* ItsAllAboutMe: His untraquilized persona actually takes this to an even more psychotic level than Roger after gaining a bond with Stan, becoming intent on destroying anyone that pulls them apart.
* JekyllAndHyde: When he's medicated, Barry is friendly but not too bright. When the drugs wear off, he turns into a conniving criminal mastermind.
* ManipulativeBastard: When not drugged, Barry is shown to be very good at manipulating people emotionally with either words or actions. For example, when Steve tries to expose
his debut.
evil side Barry begins to cry while possibly pretending to be his nice self saying he was hanging around Stan because he never had a good father. This disarms Steve who accepts a plate of food Barry made, one of Stan's commemorative plates, thereby setting him up for later.
* ParentalNeglect: Suggested off-screen. Though the fact that he's [[spoiler: a calculating possessive psychopath when off his medication]] might explain why they want to keep their distance. Ultimately [[SubvertedTrope subverted]] come the reveal of his parents.
* TheSociopath: A devious, cunning monster whenever meds aren't suppressing his true self.
* SoftSpokenSadist: Whenever off his meds he sounds like a Bond villain.
-->'''Barry:''' [[LampshadeHanging Soothing, isn't it]]? Sweet and terrible, like a madman's lullaby.
* TokenEvilTeammate: For Steve's small circle of friends.

[[quoteright:210:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/toshi_yoshida_american_dad_6_66.jpg]]
->'''Voiced by:''' Daisuke Suzuki

The fourth of Steve's circle of friends.
----
* ArrangedMarriage: In "Stan Knows Best", it was made known that he has an obedient woman waiting for him back home in Japan, even though later in "Of Ice and Men", Toshi gets another woman, Svetlana, the Russian mail order bride.
* AsianAndNerdy: As part of Steve's nerdy gang.
* AsianRudeness: Not that people realize it given his preference for speaking in Japanese.
* BadassBookworm: In the Halloween episode "Best Little Horror House in Langley Falls" where he uses a [[KatanasAreJustBetter katana]] to cut apart two serial killers.
* DoesNotSpeakCommon: He speaks entirely in Japanese out of a sense of national pride; his friends do not understand him and simply make assumptions about what he's saying.
* FunWithForeignLanguages: Toshi only speaks (subtitled) Japanese. People assume several times that assumes he has said something completely unrelated to what he has actually said, often the exact opposite.
* FunWithSubtitles: The disconnect between what Toshi is saying and what the other characters think he's saying is often played for humor.
* HidingBehindTheLanguageBarrier: More that he refuses to speak English and insults people a lot.
* JapaneseRanguage: During an argument, Snot shouts at him to learn English for once. He has this to say, ''EAT... MY... '''BOWLS!'''''
* {{Jerkass}}: Most of his dialogue is him insulting others (particularly Steve) or generally being a jerk, since he knows [[HidingBehindTheLanguageBarrier no one understands what he's actually saying]].
* KnightTemplarBigBrother: Mess with his sister, or even take her out on a date without his permission, and he will ''END'' you.
* OutOfFocus: His overall screentime is noticeably diminished when compared to Barry and Snot and he speaks less often. This likely due to him having no purpose in the series outside of the aforementioned one note running gag of him speaking Japanese and being misunderstood by everyone else.
* SecretSecretKeeper: Toshi is shown to know that he knows about Roger being an alien by stating when introduced to Steve's "Uncle Roger", "Ah yes, the alien in the wig", making Toshi one of the few outside the Smith family and the CIA to know the truth about Roger.
* StopBeingStereotypical:
** This is the reason he didn't want to wear a samurai Halloween costume.
--->''"I will not be a cliche!"''
** Once when the boys were playing ''Franchise/StarTrek'', Toshi complimented Steve's sensitivity for not automatically casting him as Sulu. That role fell to Barry, who did the "me Chinese" eyes, prompting Toshi to remark "Laugh while you can, [[JapanTakesOverTheWorld the next century is ours]]."
* TheUnintelligible: He only speaks Japanese, but it's subtitled, so the audience can understand even though none of the other characters can. His mother, father, and sister speak fluent English; his mother and sister are introduced brings up that he chooses not to speak English out of national pride.
** In another episode, it is discovered that he seems to be 'haunted' by Minamoto, a 12th century shogun whom he, ironically, cannot understand, taking his phrases for something else like his friends do with him.
** Lampshaded in "Spelling Bee my Baby" when his mother asks why he only uses Japanese when neither she nor anyone in the family speaks it.
* VitriolicBestBuds: Doesn't seem to like Steve (much of his dialogue is insulting remarks toward Steve, which Steve can't understand), but continues to hang out with him. It's implied other kids aren't as nice to him.

->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/CarmenElectra (pilot), Creator/ElizabethBanks ("1600 Candles" onward)

Lisa Silver is a senior girl at Pearl Bailey High. She is part of the popular crowd and is a cheerleader.
----
* AlphaBitch: Subverted. Lisa Silver appears willing to go out with the nerdy Steve and is surprisingly understanding when the show's antics keeps messing up the planned dates. In another episode, it ''looks'' like she and her GirlPosse did something terrible to Steve's unpopular girlfriend... but it turns out it is actually Steve's friends who are responsible, once again subverting what you'd expect from Alpha Bitch behavior.
* GirlPosse: She has two close friends, Amy and Janet Lewis.
* LivingProp: She basically becomes one after “Escape from Pearl Bailey”, minus one Season 8 episode where she says one word.
* OutOfFocus: She only makes background appearances in later seasons.
* SingleGirlSeeksMostPopularGuy: In the pilot episode, she and Steve briefly dated because he is class president and she likes the perks; although Lisa wouldn't even kiss Steve as he is "repulsive".

[[quoteright:210:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/char_31677.jpg]]
->'''Voiced by:''' Creator/LizzyCaplan

Steve’s on-again, off-again Goth girlfriend.
----
* AffablyEvil: She is revealed to be a horrible person in one throwaway joke where she reveals she shoots out squirrels' eyes. Aside from that, however, she's a reasonable, well-adjusted person.
* BigBeautifulWoman: Steve even calls her "you big beautiful creature" at one point.
* BigEater: Despite sounding like an extremely reasonable young girl who has many good traits to even win Stan over, her voracious appetite is insane. However, it's treated like a normal thing that doesn't get much attention outside fat jokes.
* ChuckCunninghamSyndrome: Her last relevant appearance was in Season 4's "Bar Mitzvah Hustle", with her few appearances afterwards being voiceless cameos in "Railroaded" and "The Chilly Thrillies". She also appears in the anniversary specials "100 A.D.", "The Two Hundred" and "300", but mainly for the sake of having each episode filled with as many recognizable characters as possible.
* DarkIsNotEvil: She's pretty nice, despite being a Goth. Although she does shoot the eyes out of squirrels, which is pretty evil.
* DemotedToExtra:
** Possibly so the writers could focus on the Steve and Akiko pairing (which was also eventually given up on). On top of that, Debbie broke up with Steve after the events of "Escape From Pearl Bailey", then they were back together in "Bar Mitzvah Hustle" and then Debbie left him for someone much more mature and it ends there.
** A deleted scene for "Bar Mitzvah Hustle" (which can be found on the Volume 5 DVD set) shows that they would've rekindled once more at the end when she would dump Aton in favor for Steve when she realizes that the former's maturity was simply just egotism.
* HiddenDepths: Is quite knowledgeable about guns.
* OnlySaneMan: Out of the entire show Debbie is possibly the most well-adjusted, rational, and emotionally mature character save for her interest in death.
* PerkyGoth: She seems to have an obsession with death and the dark side, but for the most part seems very friendly and well-adjusted.

A popular hot girl at Steve's school who he often tries to score with.

* ChuckCunninghamSyndrome: Even if it was just a brief cameo, her appearance in Season 12's "The Devil Wears a Lapel Pin" was the first time she's appeared on-screen since Season 7's "The Wrestler" nearly four years prior (and ironically, another brief background appearance).
* OutOfFocus: She started out as the girl that Steve tried to score with the most up until after the 4th season where she's been relegated to brief background appearances ever since. She also stopped have speaking appearances after Season 3's "Big Trouble in Little Langley".

Toshi's sister, who often acts as a translator.
----
* TheBigDamnKiss: With Steve in "Spelling Bee My Baby".
* BigLittleBrother: Big Little Sister: Following her SoapOperaRapidAgingSyndrome, she is taller than Toshi.
* TheBusCameBack: After vanishing from the series post-"Spelling Bee My Baby", she returns (albeit in minor, non-speaking roles) in "The Talented Mr. Dingleberry" and "Tapped Out".
* ChuckCunninghamSyndrome: Despite her and Steve becoming a couple in "Spelling Bee My Baby" she was never seen again and Steve went back to being single (because the StatusQuoIsGod). She finally reappeared for a non-speaking cameo about four and a half years later in "The Talented Mr. Dingleberry" where she (along with her father) can be spotted in the audience during the talent show.
* JustFriends:
** She and Steve spend Halloween bonding and becoming close, and Steve finally convinces Toshi to [[BigBrotherInstinct stop being so overprotective]]. Akiko thanks Steve since this means she's free...to date Doug, a 9-year-old kid who appears out of nowhere.
** "Spelling Bee My Baby" reversed this with she and Steve dating (until Akiko abruptly disappeared afterwards never to be seen again).
* SatelliteCharacter: So far, all of Akiko's major appearances have been influenced by the character(s) that she interacts with. All her scenes in her first two speaking appearances ("Weiner of Our Discontent" and "Shallow Vows") revolved around her being Toshi's translator, while most of her scenes in her latter two appearances ("Best Little Horror House in Langley Falls" and "Spelling Bee My Baby") revolve around her being [[SatelliteLoveInterest the newest girl that Steve has a crush on and tries to score with]].
* ShoutOut: Her Halloween costume was [[Franchise/StreetFighter Chun-Li]].
* SoapOperaRapidAgingSyndrome: In her first appearance, she was approximately 12 years old; as of "Weiner of Our Discontent", she's only slightly younger than Steve and his friends. This is never addressed either.

* {{Hunk}}: He's tall, muscular, and handsome. No wonder he has so many girlfriends.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: He's a total jerk to anyone that's not popular. The only time he's nice to Steve was when he had boobs from experimental steroids and when he briefly joined in his antics only to backfire. He also ultimately returned to treating Steve crappily. Despite this and being a bully and all, he's mostly nice to others he actually has respect to like his own group of friends, and has a mostly laid back, chill demeanor.
* OutOfFocus: Makes only background appearances now because Mertz is now the main bully character now. Plus, his voice actor Creator/JohnCho is too busy with his film career, which is the most likely reason why he's reduced to mostly a background character.

For example, when Steve tries to expose his evil side Barry begins to cry while possibly pretending to be his nice self saying he was hanging around Stan because he never had a good father. This disarms Steve who accepts a plate of food Barry made, one of Stan's commemorative plates, thereby setting him up for later.

Three mean girls who call themselves the Golden Girls.

* DemotedToExtra:
** Possibly so the writers could focus on the Steve and Akiko pairing (which was also eventually given up on). On top of that, Debbie broke up with Steve after the events of "Escape From Pearl Bailey", then they were back together in "Bar Mitzvah Hustle" and then Debbie left him for
murdered someone much more mature and it ends there.
** A deleted scene for "Bar Mitzvah Hustle" (which can be found on the Volume 5 DVD set) shows that they would've rekindled once more at the end when she would dump Aton in favor for Steve when she realizes that the former's maturity
thinking that's what Francine was simply just egotism.

[[BrickJoke At the end of the episode]], he shows up for the date with a limo and tux, claiming that to pay for it he had to sell ''all'' of his toys. Cue Hayley slamming the door in his face.
** Thought he had lost his virginity to his new girlfriend. It was actually Roger in disguise, and due to Roger lacking female sexual organs, he used a stress ball to "simulate" the experience.
** His family life is a wreck. His father died and showed Snot had a strained relationship that made him not care about him. His mother is frequently doing weird stuff. And his uncle opted for suicide just because the boy band with potential he had lacked one more member over another band that had a member more than them (after Snot told her about her brother's suicide, Snot's mother replied with "Tooold yaaaaa!").

Steve's lovably dumb friend who is actually a criminal mastermind when off his meds.

* BerserkButton: After Lewis deprives him of his candy, Barry gets his revenge by tricking the principal into getting shot, then twists his finger in the wound to give him even more pain.
* BitchInSheepsClothing: An odd example in that the friendly demeanor is genuine, but only because of the medication suppressing his evil urges.
His true personality is far more malicious and intelligent.
* ParentalNeglect: Suggested off-screen. Though the fact that he's [[spoiler: a calculating possessive psychopath when off his medication]] might explain why they want to keep their distance. Ultimately [[SubvertedTrope subverted]] come the reveal of his parents.

* DemotedToExtra:

* GoodIsDumb: Subverted. Barry seems to be the dumbest and most docile of Steve and his friends, but this is only because of his medication. His true personality is far more malicious and intelligent.

* ParentalNeglect: Suggested off-screen. Though the fact that he's [[spoiler: a calculating possessive psychopath when off his medication]] might explain why they want to keep their distance. Ultimately [[SubvertedTrope subverted]] come the reveal of his parents.

The fourth of Steve's circle of friends.

* AsianRudeness: Not that people realizes it.
People assume several times that assumes he has said something completely unrelated to what he has actually said,
often antagonizes Steve. Voiced by David Herman.
* TheBully: Not
the stereotypical bully, exact opposite.
* StopBeingStereotypical:
* TheUnintelligible: He only speaks Japanese,
but it's subtitled, so the audience can understand even though none of the other characters can. His mother, father, and sister speak fluent English; his mother and sister are introduced brings up that he still sabotaged chooses not to speak English out of national pride.
* VitriolicBestBuds: Doesn't seem to like
Steve in "The Talented Mr. Dingleberry", and was chosen by Principal Lewis (much of his dialogue is insulting remarks toward Steve, which Steve can't understand), but continues to be a hall monitor, and Lewis only chose students hang out with behavior problems.him. ** A deleted scene for "Bar Mitzvah Hustle" (which can be found on the Volume 5 DVD set) shows that they would've rekindled once more at the end when she would dump Aton in favor for Steve when she realizes that the former's maturity was simply just egotism.
