First of all, Pearl Pangan is a Cebuano-speaking character from Cebu. Her first language being CEBUANO and not Filipino is confirmed in Personal Heroes. Pangan is a Cebuano surname, so it makes literally no sense to say that her surname is meaningful because "panganib" means "danger" in Filipino (i.e. standardized Tagalog). This would be a stretch even if she were Tagalog. Second, Suayan said that Wave was modeled after Nadine IN HIS VERSION (in one edition), but Yu said no such thing, and even said he'd love for Angel Locsin to play Wave. Suayan wasn't even the artist in Pearl's first appearance. So it makes no sense to say that she was named Pearl after Nadine Lustre because luster can allude to pearls (again a stretch even if Lustre WERE the inspiration in the earliest conception stages).

* ComicBookFantasyCasting: Her co-creator and character designer, Filipino comic book artist Leinil Francis Yu, as well as one of her artists, Mico Suayan, modeled her after Filipina actress Nadine Lustre. This is likely a reference to Lustre being a popular choice for ComicBook/{{Darna}}, one of the Philippines's most popular superheroes.

* MeaningfulName:
** Her first name, Pearl, may be a reference to [[ComicBookFantasyCasting Nadine Lustre, the Filipina actress she is modeled after]], as "Lustre" is derived from "luster", a term that can be used to describe gemstones such as pearls. Then again, long before Lustre was even born, the Philippines was already well-known for its pearls and their pearl divers, and is famously also referred to as the "Pearl of the Orient".
** "Panganib" means "risk" in Filipino, referring to her personality and her career as a superhero.

* PoliticallyIncorrectHero: Downplayed. Which side is "right" is [[Administrivia/RuleOfCautiousEditingJudgement not to be discussed here]], but she and Aero briefly argue about the topic of territorial claims of the East Asian seas, particularly regarding the oceans near both the Philippines and China. Wave disregards that the territory she's entered is internationally recognized as Chinese territory and says that it belongs to the Philippines, while Aero tries to adhere to international law.
