Flown as a direct response to NACA pilot Scott Crossfield becoming the first person to break Mach 2[[note]]The series of test flights was actually called "Operation NACA Weep" by the Air Force[[/note]], Yeager easily reaches a speed of Mach 2.1...and ''keeps going'', getting all the way up to Mach 2.44 and an altitude of nearly 75,000 feet.
