* Gordo makes a grand entrance at Pancho's, and promptly gets put in his place by Pancho herself. What makes this totally awesome is that the real life Florence Lowe "Pancho" Barnes had her pilot's license before young mister Cooper was even fully potty-trained, literally so; Gordo was just past 1 year old when Pancho had her first solo flight after only 6 hours of training. Before Gordo had reached the tender age of 5, Pancho had entered into transcontinental air racing, crashed her plane and walked away, beaten the world speed record (taken from Amelia Earhart), and started working for Hollywood as a stunt pilot and technical aerial adviser. She was — truly — made of the right stuff.

** His X-1A flight deserves mention as well. Flown as a direct response to NACA pilot Scott Crossfield becoming the first person to break Mach 2The series of test flights was actually called "Operation NACA Weep" by the Air Force, Yeager easily reaches a speed of Mach 2.1...and keeps going, getting all the way up to Mach 2.44 and an altitude of nearly 75,000 feet. He only had to stop when the X-1A entered a flat spin and subjected Yeager to 8g acceleration, causing him to crack the canopy with his head. And he pulled the plane out of it! If there was any doubt that Yeager was an AcePilot, it was gone after this.
*** The scene ends with Ridley commenting that Yeager went as fast as a man could go, and Chuck asks him what's next. Cue Sputnik and the dawn of the Space age.

--> Pancho: What are you two rookies gonna have?
--> Gordo: Rookies? Now hold on, sis. You are looking at a whole new ballgame here now. In fact, in a couple of years, I bet you're even gonna immortalize us by putting our pictures up there on your wall. Said wall holds photos of test pilots who died while at Edwards
--> Pancho: I tell you, we got two categories of pilots around here. We got your prime pilots that get all the hot planes, and we got your pud-knockers who dream about getting the hot planes. Now what are you two pud-knockers gonna have? Huh?

Yeager had flown the X-1 several times before breaking the sound barrier to learn its systems and limitations. These flights weren't included in the film.

** Yeager breaking the sound barrier in the first place. Everyone else who's tried has failed or died. He's never flown the plane. And he has broken ribs from a riding accident the day before. And then he nails it.

* John Glenn sticking up for his wife (who had a tremendous stutter at the time):
John Glenn: Annie, listen to me, OK? You listening? If you don't want the Vice President or the TV networks or anybody else to come into the house, then that's it, as far as I'm concerned. They are NOT coming in, and I will back you all the way, a hundred percent on this. And you tell them that, OK? I don't want Johnson or any of the rest of them to set as much as one TOE inside our house.
Annie Glenn: OK.
John Glenn: You tell them that- that Astronaut John Glenn told you to say that.
