Dad is a hard series to describe to anyone if you don't have an hour to spend explaining the proper context for things. How do you explain to people that you watch a series called "Dad", where he lives with his wife, Mom, and his daughter, Daughter, in a world as overly-simplified as the family's names? How do you explain that Dad also makes music videos about his life, and has collaborated with people like Jamie Foxx to do so? What about the ARG elements, and the fact that the more you learn about the world Dad lives in, the more insane everything gets?
You can't, really.
Dad is the sort of thing I can't really stop thinking about once I've begun. The characters are fascinating, far more than their Dom Com-esque stereotypes would have you believe. The character of Mom is especially intriguing, as the more you get to know her, the more you learn just how complex and ambiguous she is. She might be unsympathetic or outright unlikeable to some, but it's her flaws that draw me to her- and the fact that, for all her faults, she seems capable of goodness and has moments of genuine, raw caring.
The music is also incredible. The lyrics can be pretty odd, as they're all themed around Dad's life and like to reference the deeper lore around the series, but watching Dad jam out to his super catchy music is super entertaining and the songs WILL get stuck in your head.
My only real gripe is that it can get pretty hard to follow. The nature of how it's presented means plot points are revealed out-of-order and most episode has some clue or lore hidden with in, just to add to the ever-growing pile of confusion and theories. But that's also one of the draws- you gotta keep watching to figure out what's happening, as well as to see what's the next event in Dad's crazy life.
Over all? Super fun series, if you're willing to tackle something complicated and weird. After all- Dad simply can't be stopped.
WebVideo Super weird, and I'm obsessed with it. (no spoilers)
