I played the previous Sherlock game and, while modest, I do think it captured the character quite well. You played Holmes and solved mysteries. This game buggers the goose so bad that the local supermarket has banned it from the Pate shelf.
It's short. Only four and a half cases long. Just over six hours. Only two hours involves any actual detective work.
There's no core-gameplay, just a procession of crappy mini-games. Do you like pushing blocks in a sewer? Or a tailing-mission from Assassin's Creed? Or juggling a bunch of timed QT Es?
There's a scene where Holmes pretends to navigate an Aztec pyramid in his mind as if he's Indiana Jones. Despite this being a dream it is possible to die.
It's garish. There's a level of violence to the game that feels clumsy. There's a ludicrous attempt at a plot that goes nowhere and runs counter to the appeal of Holmes. Moriarty was a minor character in the source who is now some demonic entity from a horror movie. This is such a jarring turn of genre and tone, it'd be like seeing Robocop finding Jesus and attending church.
It's cheap. The two main characters look new but everything is else is recycled from the previous title. It's jarring, like having a PS 4 character interact with a PS 3 character.
A fecking pygmy shows up. Any Holmes adaptation nowadays would tone down or remove the poorly-aged, offensive, or laughable elements. There's a good reason why the Holmes story where an old man shoots himself up with monkey jizz tends to be ignored.
In short this game is like a rushed together first-draft short-story. An early cut of a movie where half the scenes were never filmed. Don't play unless you can mock it with a crowd.
VideoGame "I conclude, my dear Watson, that this game is utter w**k."
