When I played Shadowgate as a kid, I hated it. It seemed needlessly cruel, obnoxious and sadistic and The Everything Is Trying To Kill You wore on me
Looking back at it now, I still think you need to be a masochist to enjoy it.
I'd like to say the game is bad, but it's not. It does what it does well enough, but you need a very patient temperament to endure it.
It's cruel, and on a first glance appears merciless, though mercifully the game is generous with saves, so the deaths do not cause you to lose much progress.
The deaths are clever, creative and varied, and I realize a big selling point for the game. If you have any business playing this game you will be the kind of person who enjoys experience the numerous Many Deaths Of You, cause you'll likely get several new ones each time you enter a room.
The game is also atmospheric and at times even immersive, though the plot is lacking. Then again the plot is really just an excuse for you to dick around the castle solving the games puzzles and finding out yet another way you can die.
Those without the right temperament but curious about those game should check out an LP, for without patience you will not get far nor enjoy this game.
For those willing to endure constant death and failures while solving the games puzzles, hop right in, you'll likely have a helluva time.
There are few (though they do exist) who think Shadowgate is a mediocre game: either its frustrating to the point where it isn't fun, or its a masterpiece. If you choose to take the plunge, brace yourself for a whooping though, because this game does not take prisoners.
