A lot of people say this is a great game, which made me curious about it. After its release on XBLA, I gave it a shot, and, well...
It's okay... I find it to be a tad dated, to be honest. I don't think it's nearly as great as people say it is. The gameplay is decent enough, but the level design can get annoying sometimes, mainly in the maze-like top-down sections
I think the area this game fails the most in are the bosses. Most, if not all of them are non-intuitive, frustrating and just a pain to deal with. To make matters worse, should you run out of time on them for any reason, you have to do the whole level over again. Because, you know, just starting you back at the boss would've been too much of a hassle. This mean you have to collect all four ideya again when you just want another chance at the boss. It's tedious and draining.
Twin Seeds doesn't do the game any favors either. Basically, you're just doing what have been throughout the entire game. Sounds easy enough, except this time, there's no capsule to go back to, so the timer doesn't reset, meaning you have to really get a move on if you wanna finish the stage before time runs out. It's frustrating, it's tedious, it's annoying and it's just not fun go through after three or four times.
It seems like the game has inspired a great deal of emotion in people, mainly by way of Elliot/Claris and Twin Seeds. I am not one of those people. I might've been, if I was given any reason to care about the characters. The XBLA version seems to have cut out the intro sequences for them (assuming the original had them in the first place), so any and all background (also instructions for the game) is All There in the Manual. But if you're like me, you'll want to actually play the game before reading the manual, so...
This isn't to say there's no good in the game. Like I said, the gameplay isn't horrible - pretty good actually. Besides that, the graphics are nice, the art style is pretty, and the music is great. But with all its flaws, I just can't bring myself to like this game that much. I can imagine it being a great game when it first came out, but... I dunno, it's just not for me, I guess.
After the XBLA release, it seemed to get mostly bad reviews, possibly making this an example of Seinfeld Is Unfunny.
VideoGame Good for its time... I guess? (XBLA Version review)
