So I've played Hollow Knight. This metroidvania is usually dark and quiet, so when the music gets louder, you know you're in for a fight. You play as an unnamed bug-creature, which you may assume to be "The" Hollow Knight. You jump down King's Pass which essentially functions as a tutorial area that shows you the basic controls. When you first start, you can't double jump, you can't wall climb, and you don't have any of the special attacks that a typical metroidvania may force you to earn by exploring the game.
As you explore Hallownest, you will begin to realize how big the kingdom really is, and how it fell into ruin. Very few of the bugs that inhabited this place will still have their own mind, while everyone else is either a zombie or dead.
The manner in which you respawn is rather unique, in that you are forced to return to your "shade" to reclaim the money you may have lost.
You also get to find charms, which improve your ability to fight, move, etc. These can either be bought at vendors or found throughout the map.
There are also several DLCs that have expanded upon Hallownest while adding new bosses and improving some of the vanilla bosses that some say were too weak.
When you unlock the Boss Rush mode, it can be kind of hellish, since you don't get to change out your charms until you are halfway through. This forces you to adapt new strategies depending on the movement of each boss.
The soundtrack itself consists of beautifully composed classic music and the occasional Melismatic Vocals.
VideoGame Knows when to be fair to you
