Series Missions 1-15
Hoooooly crap, this show is bad.
In no way is this a Sentai Deconstruction. I have literally no idea what you people are talking about. Have any of you SEEN Sentai shows? Practically everything Gobusters does, another sentai has done, and more than likely? It's been done better. Most of the quirks Gobusters has are simply an attempt at being "realistic," not with full on deconstruction intended. The realism comes off as decently as a show with teleporting spandex men can, but doesn't really help out with the shows problems. (And if you really consider it darker and edgier, I laugh in your face, because a competent villain, a hilariously angry blue, and chickens is not a dark show make.)
Easily the biggest flaw are the characters. You can tote "realistic development" all you want but that doesn't help the fact that even if it's realistic, these are flat boring characters. If I wanted to see completely realistic people I'D STEP AWAY FROM THE TOKUSATSU AND GO OUTSIDE. Hiromu's a blunt unlikable prick and his hints of a nice side come off as more inconsistent than as actual development. Yoko's a tsundere without enough tsun to be entertaining and she's a bad actor to boot. Ryuuji's decent, but would need some actually entertaining team members to be fun himself. Enter's a competent and entertaining villain, but not particularly deep or intriguing.
Plot's moving slow for a show that wants to be "different." Sure, Enter's doing stuff, but... weren't there people teleported into hyperspace or something we were thinking about? You know, the main plot? The shenanigans with Enter (and subsequently, practically the first third of the show) are basically just filler, no different than any other Sentai. Sure, Beet Buster walked in, but do you see that guy explaining himself any time soon?
In general, it's just a very low quality sentai. Fights aren't even spectacular; they're decent, but there aren't any really memorable action scenes. Mecha fights were great at first, but with the advent of Gobuster-Oh, they've gone to crap. (And that robot looks like crap to begin with, too.)
Gobusters is bland. Bland bland bland bland bland. It's just dull and boring to watch, and although Beetbuster's entertaining, he's not saving the show. Hope Gobusters becomes better, because at the moment? It's crap.
Series Absolutely Recommended
I think Gobusters was great, even if it was different. For one I love the suits, the leather is really cool. The armor they get later on is also pretty nice, and so are the enemies designs. The characters behind them are pretty great too. Hiromu is probably the weakest character of the show, as he is pretty bland. However he makes up for it by being the most determined of the characters and slowly becoming a little more lighthearted. Ryuji is the smart guy and the one with a cool head, however he has some hidden hot bloodness that becomes more apparent later on. Yoko is pretty annoying at the beginning, however her interactions with the rest of the characters (especially Ryuji and J) allow her to become more likeable as time goes on. Jin and J are my two favorite Gobusters as not only are they funny, but they are interesting on their own. Their arrival also signals the shows plot beginning to pick up. Messiah is your generic skynet like villain, however he's used as more of a threat than a character as the real villains are Enter and Escape. Enter, is probably my favorite big bad of Super Sentai. He's funny, he's a threat and he's smart. He starts off as the Dragon whose more competent than Messiah and later proves himself to be the true villain of the show. Escape was really fun as she not only hinted at some things later on in the story, but her love of battle provided some interesting fights, especially with Ryuji and his overheating.
I won't lie, the series had a interesting beginning, but quickly waned until Jin and J showed up, from their on it was good, and got better and better after Enter took over as main villain. The last 10 or so episodes were simply amazing as it got dramatic and every episode left me wanting more. Enter is a villain with a plan instead of just mindlessly attacking and thats why in the end he managed to make the tension in the show rise.
The series does have its flaws, like the support characters not getting a lot of development and the buddyroids being underused, however they do attempt to make it better later on and I feel like the good of this series definitely outweighs the bad. Give it a chance even if you don't like it at first, you may be pleasantly surprised.
