This isn't Reboot, only barely even in the same universe as Reboot. This series is really one combining-mecha away from being a "reboot" of Superhuman Samurai Syber Squad. The core elements are missing - programs as characters, playing games, rebooting into new forms, crazy humor, and deeper questions. The show even plays about with actual magic, in the form of the ultimate antagonist - the "Sourcerer", a hacker with no motivations for the harm he causes and wielder of something called "Dark Code", next-level hacking that has the ability to turn printed code purple, for whatever reason. He also has a machine capable of connecting to the internet without Wi-Fi - the concept boggles the mind. Each episode is the same - a frame story involving the personal lives of the four teenage Power Rang.... I mean "Guardians" who are then called in to fight whatever evil the Sourcerer and an upgraded Megabyte are causing. A few references are dropped - the Guardian Icon, the occasional reference to "binomes", Megabyte, but those are token.
The acting is... decent. No real complaints about the cast, from the kids to the adults to the CGI-made-human character VERA. Unremarkable, but not bad, just hamstrung by the writing, which simply doesn't have time to allow the characters to grow beyond a few base traits. The writing provides few surprises and a few moments of genuine warmth, but mainly predictable.
Later on, a connection is made with Reboot and... it's insulting to the viewers and ignorant of any continuity with the original. Insulting stereotypes, confusing references, undead characters, out-of-character behavior, and extremely awkward dialogue. Did you ever want to hear the original series intro monologue shoehorned into a conversation? Congratulations - you will!
The CGI is weird, the characters shallow, the franchise misapplied. Take this show and you could easily turn it into Superhuman Samurai Syber Squad, with the kids as Team Samurai, Megabyte and the Sourcerer as Kilokhan and Malcolm Frink, respectively, which this Troper would totally watch, but this just isn't Reboot.
The one thing that stands out is Megabyte's voice. No Tony Jay, but a very close approximation. Good on the voice actor.
One curious thing is that this show appears to have access to all the original Reboot assets, such as Megabyte's original form.
This Troper will finish out the season when it becomes available, but for now, this just isn't Reboot.
