I had never heard of this series before until it began airing on Toonami. After watching the first 3 episodes in English, I found it on kissanime.to and decided to watch the rest of the series in Japanese. And while it was fun to watch, it definitely could've been better.
Pros:
The animation is beautiful and the CGI is quite impressive.
Mira is a downright lovable character and fun to watch.
The action sequences are badass.
The English dub has some surprisingly talented voice actors.
There is some Fanservice (Mira goes nude in a few episodes) but it's not overt or in your face.
Cons:
With just 12 episodes, the series as a whole feels rushed.
The science behind the titular Dimension W and coils is confusing as all hell. Unless you have a degree in physics, it's gonna fly right over your head.
Haruka Seameyer isn't really an effective villain due to the fact that he only appears in the last three episodes and doesn't really do much other than be menacing.
Likewise, the final battle with him and his Humongous Mecha is rather anticlimactic.
Kyoma: You probably noticed that I didn't talk about Kyoma at all throughout this review. That's because he gets his own little section to himself. I love Christopher Sabat's voice acting, but man, they really could've picked a better character for him. I won't say he's the worst anime protagonist, but he's hardly the best. For two reasons:
2. He's a colossal ASSHOLE!!! Actually, asshole is not a strong enough term. Yes, he has a tragic past and yes he warms up to Mira eventually, but his Character Development happens at the end of the series and his past is certainly not tragic enough to sympathize with him. Especially after watching him treat Mira like shit for 11 episodes straight. Watching him slap her around and treat her less than a person is like watching a an abusive boyfriend beat his girlfriend. It's not endearing, it's fucking uncomfortable. One particularly egregious example is in ep. 5, where after Mira finds her way out of the other world, he slaps her for not being there to help him. I was like, "Have some fucking sympathy, you piece of shit!" Give Piccolo some credit. At least his Character Development happened much faster.
Overall, flaws and Designated Hero aside, it's still a fun anime to watch.
Manga Fun but Underwhelming
