I tried to get into this series. I tried to be fair, but I really could not get into it.
The premise is an average nobody is brought to a fantasy world alongside two of his upper classmen who were summoned to be heroes by total accident. When this one-eyed green haired super strong psycho-bitch named Rose finds out he can use healing magic. She proceeds to without even asking, press gang him into service as a battlefield medic while putting him through utter torture in order to toughen him up to survive the battlefield.
Let me make one thing perfectly clear. I despise Rose, I find her character utterly abhorrent. Her methods come straight from the kind of misaimed mind who watched Full Metal Jacket and assumed Sgt. Hartman was an ideal teacher. Her training methods are just a thinly veiled excuse to abuse and torture those unfortunate enough to be under her, and the fact that the story has the gal to play it for laughs, and even justify it makes me sick.
... and the real kicker.... I could get behind this if it was played seriously or deconstructed Rose's methods with Usato (the aforementioned nobody) was understandably pissed off at his situation, and maybe even betrayed or defected from the Kingdom out of the mistreatment, but no that's not what happens. Instead, he grows to respect his abuser, and loyally serve under her. It got to the point where even when the anime dedicates two full episodes to Rose's backstory explaining why she is so harsh, and the pain she felt losing her previous squad. I still did not feel even the slightest bit sorry for her. Instead, I wished she had died instead.
But all of that is nothing compared to near the end of the first season. A major enemy commander is captured by the heroes. Rose decides to press gang this Knight into service, and subject her to the same Hellish training as her other subordinates. Again, this is played for laughs, an honest to goodness war crime, and yet the story fully expects me to side with her.
All in all. I was uncomfortable with the subject matter at first, and by the end of the first season I hated this series. The subject matter just was not funny to me, maybe if you have a stronger stomach for this kind of stuff you can form a kinder opinion of it, but for me. I'm tapping out with season 1.
Literature Abuse and War Crimes are funny?
