Film Very Enjoyable. Probably Clint's most underrated films.
The Rookie is a 1990 Buddy cop, action-comedy starring Clint Eastwood, Charlie Sheen, Raul Julia and Sonia Braga. The film is about a veteran seasoned LAPD detective who is partnered with a young rookie police officer, who is very by the books. The both of them must put aside their conflict to take down some dangerous car thieves and their criminal empire.
This movie was criticized when it first came out yet held the top of the box office success until "Home Alone" came out a month later. But honestly I don't see why people dislike this movie. I mean sure it can be written off as a "basic action movie" or "just another Lethal Weapon cash it" but I just like The Rookie, it entertains the Hell out of me. (I call is "the lost Dirty Harry movie" actually)
Clint's character Sgt, Nick Pulovski gives me a Dirty Harry vibe being a rough around the edges cop packing a .45 Automatic, who wont hesitate to beat the truth out of the bad guys. Charlie Sheen's character, David Ackerman is the typical young fresh out of the academy rookie who is very by the books and is kind of an uptight boy scout. He's kind of a cowardly kid up until he has a very interesting character dynamic to finally come out as a trigger happy, courageous bad ass. Raul Julia's character, Strom makes an interesting villain for the film, he plays it with such style making the villain so charismatic.
There are some really good action scenes like car chases, motorcycle stunts, some excellent gun play and shootouts, and even a stunt involving a sports car speeding out of an exploding building.
Overall, The Rookie is a pretty damn entertaining and great film and deserves more recognition. If your a fan of 80's/90's action films, buddy cop movies, or a fan of Clint Eastwood's work, I would recommend this film.
Film I liked it.
The Rookie was actually the first movie I ever saw with the netflix DVD service. I might not have been old enough to have a full appreciation of good movies back then, but I remember being decently entertained. The bad guys were notably quirky yet hatable, the two main characters had a decent partnership and the special effects seemed believable. Lately I've wondered if they missed a trick by not making this a sixth Dirty Harry movie and having him reassigned to Auto theft in his old age or something.
