Film I'm going to have to go right ahead and call this the best movie ever.
It's really the sets that make it. They look like how you'd see a medieval German October if you were on every hallucinagen known to man. Veidt is amazing, as always (killing people while wearing a sweater. How cool is that?), but the real highlight is Werner Krauss, who looks like a malignant owl, especially when he puts his glasses back on at the very end. I'm going to have to go right ahead and call this the best movie ever.
Film This film did not age well.
Most glaringly, the Mandatory Twist Ending made the film feel like something by M. Night Shyamalan, and, to make matters worse, it has a serious Ending Fatigue and finally ends with a line that throws in a forced happy ending without elaborating enough to make it interesting—in short, They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot. You could tell it was an amazing film by the standards of the time, and it’s still fairly enjoyable, but it really doesn’t hold up as well as it did.
