I read the book and I loved it, and the movie...took quite a few liberties. There are a lot of differences, notably the with the circumstances of Trevor's death (He gets caught up in a mugging) and the teacher's scars (He was african american and got his scars from the war, which was an eyepatch) The story was excellent, but it just wouldn't work as a movie. The books plot was a very complex, multiple layered story, with much more details then the book that made it more realistic and made it stand out from a cheesy one-dimensional story. However, very complex, multiple layered stories do not translate well 90-minute movies, which left a lot of people with a bad impression of the overall story.
Please, Please, PLEASE read the book. The basic elements are the same, but it is different from the movie, and it's better for it.
