While Ends serves as a satisfying conclusion to the story between Laurie Strode and Michael Myers, I believe it was brought down by several flaws.
The first is how there was a copycat killer who was getting a lot of the kills in the movie. I really do like what they did with the character of Corey Cunningham, but I feel like some of the kills should’ve gone to the real Myers.
The second thing is how the fight between Laurie and Michael, which was heavily advertised in the trailers and TV spots, didn’t quite last long enough for me. If it had been extended by at least 2 minutes, I believe it would’ve been even better. The fight itself was pretty awesome, though. It, more or less, met my expectations. One minor gripe I had is that some lines in the advertisements were unfortunately only there for the trailers(“Come and get me, motherfucker”, “Come on, let’s go”, “Happy Halloween, Michael”). Even the one line that was actually in the film(“You came here to kill me, so do it”) was actually said against the copycat killer and not Myers himself, which was disappointing. If this is supposed to be the final battle between the two, then I feel like the addition of these lines would’ve made it feel more climactic.
All that being said, I love how Laurie was handled in this film, and it genuinely feels like a conclusion to her character throughout the franchise. Her relationship with Corey was handled well, her fight with Michael was well-executed and appropriately climactic, and her character is done the justice it deserves in this one. While this film may have its flaws, I’m at least content with how Laurie’s arc wrapped up.
Halloween Ends is a conclusion that doesn’t quite hit all the right spots, but serves as a satisfying conclusion to the decades long battle between Laurie Strode and Michael Myers, and it’s a final reckoning done well. 8/10
Film A fitting end to Michael and Laurie’s story, but not without some flaws (spoilers)
