This is not just the best Terminator fanfic; this is one of the best scifi epics I've read, period.
It covers the whole war against the machines, from the time the bombs fall at the end of T3, until 28 years later after everything has been done and said (it wisely ignores everything after T3, that was consistently garbage in this franchise).
The author creates a compelling universe of characters and every battle, every event of the war is treated with care and as detailed as possible. Everything makes sense and even the sheer luck that so often is a factor in winning a war is handled carefully.
It's choke full of both epic and nightmarish moments (specially once the Mercurials enter the scene) and the author handles the multiple tones effortlessly.
It's also a heartwarming showcase of the relationship between John and Kate, and they're far from the only heartwarming relationship (both romantic and not) in the story.
Seriously, this fic has little to no flaws and, as far as I'm concerned, this is my "canon" for how the war against the machines went.
