A somber but excellent work detailing Spike's adventures if he had never left the Red Dragon Syndicate. In a tale destined to come to tragedy, the author does a stellar job capturing the feel of their characters, letting the reader immerse themselves like they're viewing an Alternate Universe OVA series. Much like its inspiration, it focuses on little details, with the added fun of plenty of shout outs to Bebop proper. The dynamic between Spike and Vicious in particular is an enjoyment to see, with the two feeling very much like they would in an expansion where they had to see and communicate with one-another, at least in a professional sense. Julia is another point of strength, shining through on a character the anime had exist largely through interpretation rather than direct interactions but here she fits right in with the others.
The balancing is done fantastically and while it's by no means a happy work—something it's quite honest about—it's a good work with no shortage of depth, symbolism or love to its parent work and a thoroughly enjoyable read!
