The Writing on the Wall is a very hard story to discuss because of its nature; a great deal of what makes it so powerful is exactly what makes it difficult to explain beforehand.
The story takes advantage of the Adventurer Archaeologist tropes in order to craft a very different story - the story is, at its heart, a subversion of such stories, as it starts out exactly as one would expect such a story to start, but then gradually drifts off-track; by the time the villain shows up, things have already gotten off-track due, and things only spiral further out of control from there as the villain, expecting to step into their standard adventure, instead finds little resistance, but does not understand the danger he is in.
The horror is subtle and insidious, creeping up on the reader, until by the end the reader comes to understand exactly what is going on and is suitably horrified. This is the sort of thing which transcends being fanfiction and is just literature, and is well worth the read.
