FanFic A good story with flaws
WARNING: I have not fully caught up with Tsubasa Chronicle so my interpretation of things might not be accurate.
I found this story after finishing Reversal Of Fate when I looked in the author's page Tonight's The Night. While I was put off by the premise of a Kurogane/Syaoran, I decided to read it because I thought since the writer wrote Reversal Of Fate which I found in the Tsubasa Chronicle Fanfic page it would be worth giving a shot. And I was not disappointed. While it does take the cliche of R!Syaoran being hated because of C!Syaoran's betrayal in Acid Tokyo, I liked that it explores the consequences what would that mean for the group. It also takes it time to justify why Kurogane and Syaoran would get together.
I had very mixed feelings on the idea that the others would blame Syaoran for Acid Tokyo. On one hand, I know that it doesn't make sense because they didn't do that in the manga and while they had mixed feelings for him they didn't blame him for what happened and treat him fairly. On the hand, I was surprised that the manga didn't'' take this path as I thought it would have been more natural for the group to need someone to blame and since R!Syaoran is indirectly responsible and a living reminder of the friend they lost that he would have been put the ringer before being accepted. So I admittedly enjoy the cliche.
I didn't like how R!Syaoran already started broken by the others' hatred. I thought the story would have more of an impact exploring how the others grew to hate him and how that hatred would have slowly driven him up the wall, but it's so well put-together I gave it a pass.
The story takes its sweet time to get things moving. I like it because it uses its length to justify the Character Development of the group and the results of it. I liked how the others grew in different ways because of the resulting changes.
FanFic The story that changed everything I thought about Yaoi
Having low opinions on Yaoi as a result of experiencing the Kingdom Hearts fandoms, I got alienated when I even consider reading this fic in favor of her other work. However, after troper by the name of konekootome recommended this fic and feature a trope page of it, I decided to try and read this fic and in a sign of genuine surprise, it's not like any yaoi I have ever read in that it's actually a good one. The biggest positive part about this fic is that the author treats the KuroSyao crack pairing very seriously and in tune with their characters and still managed to avoid the Transplanted AU trap that I loathe. Another good point is that the author completely avoids the cliche romance fic by having them hooking up at the very last minute but instead they did it mid-way into the story when Infinity arc ends and still remain interesting because of the progression even through their relationship. Sakura also does not get demonized despite being in the way of her pairing but instead treated with as much respect as any other character.
As for the negative points, well each chapter comprised of approximately 2k words so that means you could not read the entire story in offline state as you have to surf through hundreds of chapters in order to fully grasp the story. Another part I could barely tolerate is the mean spirited nature at the beginning towards Syaoran to the point of skipping a couple of chapters towards the end of Infinity arc just to make it more bearable.
However, in the end this fic stands as an example into how to create a good yaoi fic and made my outlook on yaoi a lot more positive. The final verdict for this fiction is a 9 out of 10. It is a must read fic and is given, a baddass seal of approval.
