I'll admit, I first started reading this only because of a nice piece of fanart depicting a scene where Velvet is given a little plushie version of herself by Jaune, and it is pretty damn cute, so I wanted to know the context behind it.
The story has a premise I can't say I had come across before reading it. A Peggy Sue fic where Jaune doesn't get his memories in full, instead only subconsciously like muscle memory and PTSD triggers. So you have Jaune technically Dreaming of Things to Come while being slightly stronger and taking a more active role in the greater plot. But then you realize that not only is this dime a dozen thanks to authors like Coeur Al'Aran, but that the fic has some big problems.
It's attempts to avoid Outdated by Canon. The fic was written between Volumes 2 & 3, a point where many details were vauge. So the fic tries to create backstories and personalities to flesh them out. Except it then tries to apply canon information without doing an Orwellian Retcon, creating tons of series continuity errors.
For example, in the fic Ren is initially a researcher and member of the "Jade Dragon Clan", a Vale family of Huntsmen and Doctors that use eastern naming. Problem is, Volume 4 would reveal Ren's past, that not only was his family the Ren family and civilians, but that he was the Sole Survivor of his village, meeting an orphaned Nora shortly after.
Sounds like a minor issue explained away as an Alternate Universe? It would be... were it not for the fact that later on, the characters go to his village, and Nora references their past while trying to support Ren. So Ren's backstory and personality are now like canon. And it doesn't do an Orwellian Retcon.
Why not? Because Ren being in the Clan is a plot point, since Mercury noticing him talking about the Black Dust and noting his family lineage causes Cinder to alter her plans somewhat and get Mercury to try and play nice with Ren. It has to be there to justify Cinder learning about the Black Dust.
Then there is the common pitfall most Jaune focused works fall into. Jaune is turned into an Escapist Character.
Jaune's acts, no matter how small, allows the plot to avoid canon tragedies like Pyrrha's death. He also is given other's roles in their arcs, taking Ports place in Weiss' and Sun's in Blake's. And both times this gains him their affection, which leads too:
While this isn't a "Shipping" fic, Jaune has a harem bigger than Issei's. How many people does Jaune have in his though? 18. Including all of Teams RWBY and NDGO, Pyrrha, the female members of Teams CFVY and ABRN, Penny, May, Neon, Amber, and Sienna! And he gets their attention after meeting them only once or twice!
So yeah, interesting premise, bogged down in execution, a rushed Harem plot, constant shifts to reflect canon without changing things to fit, it just makes this fic mediocre at best, bad at worst.
Fanfic Interesting at first, screwed by questionable writing decisions (Spoilers for RWBY V3+)
