ComicBook Well that was unsatisfying
Where to start at the Beginning I really liked this series it mostly your standard bad superman book it has fun with it and makes some really cool characters and then survivor nearly kills plutonium and it's mostly down hill from there the plot past that point just feels forced as with survivors proven effectiveness against plutonian the only reason the hero's don't win and millions more die is the "smart" one wanting to save his friend after committing enough omnicide to make hitler and Stalin blush and it happens again and again to the point of absurdity but modeus was fun and most of the side characters were enjoyable to read about but by the end I was bored and I had to force myself to finish some parts 4/10
ComicBook Dark, but Gripping
When I picked up Irredeemable, I had no knowledge of it save for being another Evil Superman tale. I can now say that it's probably the most terrifying version of that archetype that will ever exist. Not only is "Superman" evil, he's also a serial killer that revels in pain and suffering. No one can stop him and he knows it, so he just goes around blowing up cities and burning politicians. The really crazy thing is how this all happens within a few weeks. Plutonian becomes evil —-> 2 weeks later, Earth becomes hell.
Oh boy, is this story a dark one. Filled with atrocities and Hope Spots galore. I do like the characters so it's not so much that they're unsympathetic as it is that the state of the world is so bleak for so long, and every time a chance appears to turn it around, something or someone (usually Qubit) comes along to sabotage it that it just hurts to watch. The Plutonian's Plot Armor gets very annoying after a while even when multiple characters should've been able to end his reign of terror. By the very end, so much has happened that the idea that this world could ever go back to anything approaching normal seems almost absurd.
The mystery aspect was soooo well done. The revelation that no one actually knew anything about Tony aside from Bette was crazy. Another difference from Superman because he was always upfront about his teammates and friends.
My biggest gripe is that it goes on a little too long. After Survivor gets his power boost, I didn't really understand why they didn't immediately make a beeline for Plutonian to beat him to death.
Another problem is that a lot of plot threads ended up going nowhere. Like whatever Modeus' plan was with the magical supervillain or the whole Tree of Life thing. The ending also felt extremely rushed, somehow. and I wasn't a fan of how Qubit sent Tony's essence(?) into other dimensions which ended up creating Superman as a concept. Like no, you made a good story but don't try and act like you had a hand in Superman, Mark Waid.
I'd give it a solid 8/10
