I was skeptical at first, going in, as someone I knew had seen this and disliked it severely. Thankfully, I had an enjoyable experience while watching this film. The main character, Anna, was a character that I found I had a lot in common with, behavior-wise, especially her tendency to be unintentionally unfriendly. The supernatural elements in this are... confusing, but nevertheless open to interpretation. The cast is a very talented one, consisting of Hailee Steinfeld, Kiernan Shipka, (I really hope those two do another movie together) Geena Davis, John C. Reilly, and Vanessa Williams. Oh, and the animation is lovely as always.
But sadly, while I could gush about this film all day, I need to get to the “You May be Disappointed” part. The Reveal in this film is highly divisive, and I need to tell you all this: Abandon Shipping, all ye who watch this film.
As for what I think of The Reveal, well... as a girl, I had a very close relationship with my grandmother, who passed away when I was very young as well. I find the idea of Marnie reaching out to her granddaughter from beyond the grave very touching, as Anna spends most of the film feeling unloved.
All in all, think what you will, but this movie is definitely worth a watch.
