The Second Renaissance was powerful both visually, aesthetically and intellectually. Not only did I find it the best segment of the Animatrix, but I also found it even better than the entire Matrix movie trilogy.
The Matrix movies are good fun that have acceptable special effects and martial arts (although there's too many times of cheating since the writers simply allow Neo to literally fly away - especially in Reloaded) and while the Matrix movie's main plot is answering the question "What if we're all living in a virtual reality", the Second Renaissance's main plot is answering an even more serious, more frightening question of "What if the A.I. we built want to (and realized they can) take over and overthrow us?"
That's not to say that I believe reality is going to happen exactly just like Second Renaissance did - A.I. could take over and replace humanity even faster and sooner than depicted in Renaissance! I also feel (and fear) the idea and fact that we're going to put even stronger, mightier robots in charge of manual labor than the ones depicted in Renaissance. Unlike in Renaissance, it's very unlikely that A.I. needs to create its own analogous sanctuary country to disperse the seeds of humanity's destruction when they have all they need in the digital universe. Also, humans would lose in less than 2 seconds to A.I. if a hot war were to ever occur.
The Second Renaissance doesn't even need the other segments of Animatrix or the Matrix movies to finish its story or message. It's a great complete story on its own.
Anime "Second Renaissance" is brilliant
