Why wasn't Spiritual Antithesis changed from a trope to YMMV as well?

Making Spiritual Antithesis YMMV would require a separate Trope Repair Shop thread.

This being YMMV feels wrong, since there are many works that were deliberately made as spiritual successors. I even see examples where actual, official sequels are listed as "spiritual sequels".

If this is YMMV, it should only be for cases where fans treat a work as a spiritual successor to a series/work, not cases where the similarities were fully intentional. Homage or Pastiche sound like the best tropes for such examples.

This is a common issue with TRS: a trope has a large change such as becoming YMMV/objective/trivia or a rename, and then every example is just moved to the new name/subpage without making sure it fits, even though such changes are usually done because a lot of the examples were wrong.

Count me in on, "This should be YMMV". Or, if it depends on the creators confirming that it's a spiritual successor, as mentioned in the repair shop message, then that should be emphasized on the trope's description.

Also count me in on, "I've seen this abused a lot". In fact I am wondering if we're seeing more Spiritual Successor lately because Expy was given a time-out. But I also think Expy should be YMMV. But at least Expy's page clearly states that it has to be an deliberate reference.

Question: shouldn't this trope be considered as a YMMV one?

Old post but yes I agree it should be YMMV.

I bet there's a lot of misuse here; should we make this either YMMV or Just for Fun?

I'm surprised it isn't YMMV. Unless it's backed with Word of God (and possibly for legal reasons that wouldn't be a great idea for a creator sometimes) it almost surely is down to your own interpretation (and even if something is glaring and seems as obvious as snow, without Word of God it is YMMV)!

"Horrifyingly, Sweet Apple Massacre could be considered this to Cupcakes."

I'd argue against this, Cupcakes is considered actually scary on some level by most, where as SAM is just considered worthless trash.

Okay, let me preface this by saying I mostly limit my work on this site to editing every typo I come across. I just don't have time for more.

That being said, this article is completely off-track. Look at the video game section ALONE. See a problem? It's (as of this posting) over 8500 words long, & most of the examples don't demonstrate the trope. Okay, the Guitar HeroRock Band is a good example: they showed who were involved to make the two series. Most of the other examples don't do this. They just say, "Hey, you know what was like that one thing? That other thing. It's totally a spiritual successor."

Because of this, the article is physically draining & largely unreadable. Someone needs to cut out the bad examples, but there ARE SO MANY.

If taking 10 seconds to check your grammar is too long for you, just think how much worse if all of your fingers were broken. By me. Hide / Show Replies

I have real trouble getting my head round the idea that Friends is a spiritual successor to Cheers, because it's about a Nakama of unmarried thirty-somethings with sexual tension and has "some form of restaurant as their default set".

Basically, the emphasis of the two shows is completely different: Friends is about a group of friends with a Local Hangout (and storylines are just as likely to take place in either apartment). Cheers is a Work Com where the place of work happens to be a bar. And if you can map the characters as neatly as Channel4 did when it trailed How I Met Your Mother as "New episodes of Friends without boring ruddy Ross", I'd be very surprised.

It doesn't fit the trope so well, but Stargate Universe is creepily like the 2003 Battlestar Galactica. Even down to the autocratic commander, Morally Ambiguous Doctorate and Cool Ship cruising through empty space.
