Okay, unlike the Jem and The Phantom of the Opera examples, I think the The Little Mermaid examples can be fairly easily discussed here since they're confined to one page (the Jem and Phantom examples were spread out):

From Durandal:

  • Gender Flip: He presents himself as a saint to various "poor unfortunate souls", transforms Meer in accordance with her dream, then steals her voice and Lacus's for his own use. Meer may be the Hans Christian Andersen version of The Little Mermaid, but Durandal borrows a lot from Ursula, even down to a tentacle-like black mass of hair. He also plays the sea witch in a SEED Character Theater Picture Drama.

From Meer: Shout-Out:

  • Meer's character is this to the Hans Christian Andersen version of The Little Mermaid. (A mermaid is "Meerjungfrau" in German.) The mermaid in the story transformed her appearance completely through a bargain, gave up her voice for her dream, did not regain it, and Did Not Get The Guy she was in love with. Oh, and she ends up losing her life by sacrificing herself instead of the person she cares most about, just like that mermaid. It's even represented in one of the SEED Character Theater picture dramas, with Durandal playing the sea witch who transformed her.
  • She's also this to the heroine of the eponymous 80's cartoon Jem, given that she's a highly-talented accessory-wearing pink-haired popstar who exists for reasons of necessity and her identity is incredibly popular, but not realnote . Meer's slightly-elongated star hairclip can be seen in the Jem logo.

Fairytale Motifs are much more universal than specific 1980's American media, so it's already an easier sell there. Especially with that "Durandal plays the Sea Witch" part, which would be a slam dunk, except I can't find it. I assume it's referring to Gundam SEED Character Theater, but I don't see anything resembling that on our page and according to the Gundam wiki neither Durandal nor Meer actually appear in the show so it has to be something else. Also "tentacle-like black mass of hair" is a reach.

I brought up my thoughts on the Jem example (and Lacus') in the Gundam Thread.

As we know, the Expy trope is not meant for superficial similarities by audiences or fans alike; it has to be made explicit by the creators (in this case, it's Sunrise). As such, I removed the entries for potential misuse since Sunrise hasn't officially confirmed the similarities. Unfortunately, this example was re-added to Rau's section:

  • Expy: So there's a guy. Constantly wearing a mask, having issues with his health and identity and the rest of the world since birth. Manipulating a couple of jerks, perfectly willing to use threats, psychological pressure, and violence, and the only thing that seemingly has any hold over him is a little soprano ingenue with a Scandinavian father... oh, yeah, and there's also the reasonably decent guy she's engaged to. Rau's dislike of copying is probably the only reason he didn't change his name to ''Erik''. He still makes a hell of a chandelier crash shooting a light fixture at Mendel. note

When I brought it up on the Expy cleanup thread, mightymewtron said:

Not familiar with the work but the chandelier crash could be a pretty good hint at it being intentional, since that's probably Phantom's Signature Scene. But I'm assuming this is cherrypicked traits.

While I’m still waiting for further feedback on the cleanup thread, what should we do about this trope for now?

Huge reach.

Especially since he's such a Char Clone. Also I really don't think Phantom is that big of a cultural touchstone in Japan. I believe "chandelier crash" is a reference to him shooting down a nebulous piece of equipment in a gunfight which seems... iffy. Most everything else is so ridiculously vague or coincidental/completely missing the point that they're basically meaningless.

For now, it's just an unbashed edit war.

Also notable is that there's an enemy team called "Phantom Pain" and his faction in the next series would begin using a mobile suit with "Phantom" in its name so if he's such an expy it would be weird that he manages to not actually have direct connections to the various Phantoms in the universe.

Right, so unless someone objects, should we remove it?

Thanks for letting me know about this discussion. Considering that entry has been there for several years without anyone having a problem with it.

Rau being based on Erik would be less obvious were Lacus not a young singer with a Scandinavian dad and a fiance who has a hold on him for some reason. Without her, it would be a stretch, yes. With her, it's rather obvious. I'm sorry I'm the only one who seems able to make that connection.

In temperament, his version of identity issues and the way he plots things, he's vastly more Erik than Char.

By the way, there is nothing in the Expy page that says they have to be officially confirmed by the creator, so I think the purge itself was misguided.

The Expy trope is also undergoing an ongoing cleanup effort on this thread. There's also a relevant note in the Expy page that says:

Remember that an Expy must be a clearly deliberate reference on the part of the author; superficial or random coincidental similarities (even very striking ones) do not qualify, so if you aren't certain, they probably are not an Expy.

Since Sunrise (the author in this case) actually hasn't confirmed the references between Erik and Rau, I think we can remove it.

"A Scandinavian dad" is so obscure that I didn't know that about either character. And portraying Lacus and Catherine's effect on Rau/Erik as being the same, or even in any way similar is... a huge stretch. "A hold" is... well, doing a lot of work since it apparently covers "being a lust object for" as well as "leading an army against."

As you say, you're the only one who makes the (tenuous) connection. Expy isn't a Just for Fun where you can make comparisons between unrelated characters.

Well, I definitely see it as well. Some of the connections do feel like jumping through a couple hoops, but there are quite a few of them, many of which aren't shared by the other Char clones, so I wouldn't say its grasping at straws.

I would say that absent any proof of creator intent, or even just probable cause (such as Fukuda being a fan of Phantom like he is with Star Wars), it can't really qualify for Expy.
