I\\\'m not going to argue what is or isn\\\'t \\\'\\\'canon\\\'\\\' regarding \\\'\\\'any\\\'\\\' Eighth Doctor media, be it audio, prose or comic strips. I was just saying that specifically Creator/RussellTDavies and Creator/StevenMoffat (you know, \\\'\\\'the writer of \\\"The Night of the Doctor\\\"\\\'\\\'?) and their television production teams deliberately avoid defining one.

My point was that canon and non-canon has nothing to do with what defines an expanded universe. Several expanded universes (I can\\\'t name specific ones, but I assume \\\'\\\'Star Wars\\\'\\\'?) are either canon or \\\"canon until a higher level of canon overrules it\\\". Series.DoctorWho is one continuous-ish television show with 33 seasons and several specials, which have overruled and retconned \\\'\\\'itself\\\'\\\'.

If this wiki had Series.DoctorWho1963, Film.DoctorWho (or Film.DoctorWho1996) and Series.DoctorWho2005, then maybe I\\\'d buy your argument that the Eighth Doctor audios supersede Film.DoctorWho as the main \\\"Eighth Doctor\\\" media in some way. As it stands, though, the 1963 version, the television movie and the 2005 version are all Series.DoctorWho, which makes Eight part of the long sort-of-continuous TV series strand which started in 1963 and has a new 34th season scheduled for 2014.

Personally, of course I\\\'d count both the depiction and the scripting from the 1996 movie as the \\\"original\\\". From 2001-2005, he had three separate, ongoing stories with separate ongoing companions from Big Finish, in \\\'\\\'Doctor Who Magazine\\\'\\\' and in novels. All of them draw from the TV movie if not in characterisation (I\\\'m only mildly familiar with the audio plays and not at all the other two), then in appearance considering what\\\'s illustrating the covers.
