First, the guy\\\'s crush isn\\\'t the main plot of the episode, so that disqualifies it right away. Second, the only reason it comes up the few times it does is actually to provide information to the viewer about Soo Lin, and later to provide a way for Sherlock to logic out her importance to the case. The guy vanishes from the show as soon as that information is delivered and the story never even tells us whether he found out about what happened to her.
