This trope, or something like it, already shows up in ancient Greek (usually Athenian) vase-paintings: The heroes and gods always have well-groomed beards and hair of a moderate length, except when gods are clean-shaven. The horny satyrs and wild, dangerous centaurs have long, shaggy, unkempt beards and hair. Centaurs are typecast as evil, while satyrs are dangerous, unpredictable, and constantly trying to grab and screw nymphs.
