In the first Curse of the Moon the canon ending is actually the one where Zangetsu ignores all allies, since none of them die (they only risk their lifes) and help him at the end (which explains why on the second game they already know each other and are on friendly terms), Zangetsu actually has a change of heart and ends the curse (which is why the final stage is called on that ending Cleave the Moon instead of Curse of the Moon) and on the ending screen instead of saying THE END like in the other endings the screen says FIN. The reason you don\\\'t unlock anything in that ending is because you finished the story for good and the Nightmare mode rather than being the true or canon ending is just an alternate sequel to a bad ending kust like Julius mode in Castlevania Dawn of Sorrow.
