Treehouse says you didn't marry Clanne, actually. tongue

My Clanne actually wound up one of my best units, somehow. It's weird, but I guess low Mag growth doesn't hurt as much when his Speed growth lets him double a lot more things than most other mages can.

Yeah, Speed is the key Mage Knight cap. Boucheron, and his 0% personal Mag growth, can succeed at Mage Knight. That's just how inherently cracked the class is.

All the drama over Elise and Sakura being "technically adults" is really funny to me as someone who has an IRL close friend who looks even younger relative to her actual age than Elise does.

That being said, "Fates" is my first and only Fire Emblem game, I haven't touched the rest of the series. I do have some of the amiibo though.

[up][up]I remember that Lyn’s original age was meant to be around Sakura’s and Elise’s: 15 years old. I don’t recall if Japan ever gave her an age lift like the localization did.

I also remember being caught off guard by Petra’s age…which is also 15.

Elise is canonically no older than 14. She was born after Corrin's kidnapping, and that was confirmed to be 15 years ago.

Sakura was born before the kidnapping, so she has to be at least 15, though she has memories of Corrin so realistically she's maybe 16? It's a bit of a stretch for her to have memories from being a one-year-old, but her being 17 or older seems like a bigger stretch.

Fates' more egregious crime is the introduction of the Deeprealms, aka microwave easy-bake ovens for all your eugenics needs. tongue

Goddamn Fates is a perfect example of how Pandering to the Base can lead to fucked up results.

How they hell Fates is scuzzier than Awakening considering Awakening had Nowi is a testament to how fucked up they're willing to make things despite them somehow always getting it to slide.

And yet somehow they got squeamish about Tokyo Mirage Sessions goddamn. Not saying they shouldn't have but really they just shouldn't have had that setting in the first place.

Despite all this please don't take my big-tittied onee-sama away from me though I like Camilla because I'm also a little depraved.

[up][up]While I do think that the Deeprealms weren't exactly a smooth solution for having second generation characters, I don't exactly hate them as a concept, especially since they remind me of the Dragon Palace from the tale of Urashima Tarou. Which is kind of fitting, seeing how water dragons play a major role in Fates.

While I would have welcomed a less clunky solution to explaining why second generation characters are grown up and ready to fight when you recruit them, it's certainly not the worst thing in the series I've seen, especially since the first game on a new system introduced some even ickier themes that make the Deeprealms seem like small potatoes to me. Though to be fair, even those ickier themes didn't make that game a dealbreaker for me.

Look at Dragonfire trying to use the "Bait the absence" technique to push the thread towards Three Houses discourse. [lol]

[up]Honestly, I'm not sure I'd even say the ickier bits surrounding Edelgard are the worst things in the series I've seen, especially since some of the grosser parts come from certain fans, and said fans can be easily ignored.

I'm just glad that no game in the series has anything that I would consider a dealbreaker, and that the games in general aren't super offensive for the most part, especially compared to some of the viler pieces of media I've seen.

I probably should boot up Fates again some time and play through it again since it's one of my favorite games in the series and it's the Year of the Dragon. However, I'm currently experiencing a major Shin Megami Tensei craze, so it'll probably be a while before I get back to the Fire Emblem games.

The secret to not being bothered about it, is to NOT romance Sakura or Elise.

Why romance them when you have Kagero? Or Selena?

Now I'll be the first to admit I do find Camilla and Hinoka hot, but uhhh yeah, the adopted family thing is a deal breaker tho we aren't actually related.

So Kagero it is in my Birthright run. I was seriously tempted to romance Hinoka but uhhhhh Kagero has 3 big arguments. 1 that she's not related to Corrin.

I used to think that Fire Emblem's reputation as "the Nintendo series with incest" was an exaggeration, like it was something only really present in one or two of the older games and the rest was people just memeing. But after playing Fates and Three House's/Engage's "incest with extra steps" I have to admit that no, they were on to something clearly!

FE fandom's pretty chill compared to some others I've been in. The biggest fights I've seen are about the quality of different "eras" of the series and, of course, Edelgard. Even the shippers are fairly quiet - admittedly, probably because you can make any pairing you want happen in most games, except Basilio/Flavia somehow!?

jokes about the franchise aside, the incest in early fire emblem games was very much portrayed as a bad thing, for the most part. it wasn't supposed to be casual or part of the setting, when it happened as a plot point it seriously messed up everyone involved.

unfortunately there is some incest that isn't properly addressed in Genealogy/Thracia(?), but i dont think it was meant to be intentional. it was just an oversight of the eugenics romance and generational system. and the same thing happened in Awakening, where there is incest but it's very obviously an unintended consequence of the pairing system and some of the first gen characters' relationships to each other.

....there is absolutely no excuse for Fates though. it knew what it was doing and leaned super hard into it, even if it meant completely undermining the entire point of the game.
