Despite the fact that neoclassical artists were a bunch of fuddie-duddies who painted formulaically and wouldn't let go of the past, I actually like the art style. Classicists too. Yeah, I dunno. So, in this thread, such artwork!

Cute. I made an avatar out of it.

The Raft of the Medusa

The Sistine Chapel: More than Creation of Adam! I love that thing where they paint fake architecture.

So Yeah!

That second link is a 404. Might want to fix it.

Bleh, percent-encoding can go die in a beautifully-rendered fire

Why do I get such a strong Ho Yay vibe from those works? I mean, in the Medusa one, he went and rendered the nipples of some (apparently) dead guy, which were inexplicably erect. And in the Sixtine, what seems to be God dresses in a pink dressing gown, and has his well-rounded buttocks displayed in such a way it seems the cloth isn't there at all.

Erect Nipples: This is classicism. The figures weren't drawn from imagination or a photograph. Some guy was lying naked, probably for several hours, and was probably very cold. Various drawings/ paintings were done either one at a time or in small groups and "assembled" to make the completed painting.

And yeah, the creation of the sun is a weird painting. Took me forever to figure out it's supposed to be interpeted sequentially.

Sequentiality is a given with Church paintings: it's the origin of the Comic Book. BUT YOU NEED TO KNOW THE SYMBOLS TO BE ABLE TO IDENTIFY THE CHARACTERS BEFOREHAND.

But, seriously, God looks far too much like Zeus there... And Zeus is an asshole.

People had been trying to synthesize Greek Mythology (the stuff those really smart people believed) and Christian Mythology (the one TRUE dogma) for a long time by then.

But now I just feeling like I'm telling you stuff you already know.

^ Well, no, I didn't know that. Do you have citation? I mean, this sounds like such stupid nonsense, but coming from the Catholics...

Raw, I think you're misunderstanding him. The synthesis he's referring to is literary/artistic, not theological.
