And here it is! "A Boy And His Blob"

Favorite part: his rant about people stealing instruction manuals.

This was briefly covered in an Xmas special, wasn't it?

[up] Indeed he did, which he acknowledges in the video.

Another disappointing episode. I didn't even crack a smile. Also it wasn't very ambitious- much as I didn't like the Indy episode, at least it had some originality.

My opinion is kinda the opposite. I liked this episode ok (although I don't think A Boy And His Blob offers much to poke fun at), while I was a bit disappointed by the previous Indiana Jones episode, although maybe I should give it another go.

My main problem with the previous episode was him trying to have it parody the Dial Of Destiny film... before the film was even out. Yeah everyone knew it involved time travel, but nobody knew to what extent, thus there wasn't much James could do with the idea.

Also, it's kinda weird that Present-Day Nerd would do a video talking about going to see Dial Of Destiny, without actually reviewing any games.

Lastly, I feel James has reached the age where he can't convincingly do "back to the past" episodes anymore. He was still kinda able to do it in 2016 with the Mega Man episode, and the Last Ninja episode from last year was pushing it some, but, now in 2023, I don't think he can really pull it off. I mean not only does he look older, but he sounds older.

Monster Madness 2023 has begun:

I do wish they would cover Tucker & Dale vs. Evil, a comedy-horror that parodies Hillbilly Horrors.

This episode seemed like it had audio issues. When the audio of the game, music, and James' voice over seemed fine, but whenever he was on-camera speaking the audio seemed muffled or something (I even kept re-adjusting my earbuds to make sure they were the issue, or put on a different video; it wasn't).

I don't know if it says so in the game manual, but now I'm wondering if the reason the townspeople was attacking Jekyll was because of that demonic Boss face, since the town goes quiet after you defeat it.

It's the best AVGN of the year, although since I didn't really care for the other four, that's not a high bar. But it's at least interesting to look at, and had some nice orchestral arrangements of the Jekyll & Hyde NES music.

James managed to re-upload this particular episode to You Tube:

It isn't just covering up anything YT would disapprove of, so yeah watch it for some fun.😁

I like that instead of "Atari Porn" it's "Atari Pork". Given what "Pork" can be slang for, I'm not sure that sounds any better.

I've only seen this all the way through maybe once, like way back when it was first uploaded on Game Trailers, and didn't miss it not being on Youtube (officially, any way. Others uploaded it), as I overall found it too disgusting.

Season 1 has also been uploaded in edited form. Some are speculating that these self-censored videos are due to YT demonitizing videos with language; others are saying it's Screenwave trying to use the algorithm to get more easy views. Might be a combo of both.

At any rate, I can't say I'm that interested in these reuploads. I watched the Atari Pork one and it was more odd than funny.

Someone in the comments (probably jokingly) theorized that James' kids found out about AVGN and wanted to see the series.

Time for the Christmas episode:

I'm sure it's to get more views, but does it seem like this whole year, and maybe last year too, James has been reviewing relatively more mainstream games for the AVGN series?

[up][up][up] A lot of people speculate the the censorship in the Atari Pork review was lampooning how TV broadcasts would often sloppily censor the language in R-Rated movies.

[up]x2 There's a theory going around that he only chooses games that Mike Matei has played on his livestreams so he can use gameplay footage from it without having to record his own. While this might be true, at least James did grow up with FF 3 (or 6) so even if he was using someone else's footage, the recounting was probably from his own experiences, such as the save file disappearing.

[up] There's one way they could confirm that. If someone was able to compare Mike's gameplay footage with the footage in James'videos.

I think some people did just that and discovered similarities. And remember that "5 Awesome Overshadowed NES Games" video James posted this year? It was made up entirely of games Mike had previously played on his streams.
