That picture is amazing!
I know! I thought it was hard just drawing portraits the normal way, and this guy comes and makes them out of multicolored shapes!
Sadly, he's really obscure, though. I only know about him because he was my mom's art professor.

Read my stories!I'm a big fan of illustrators, particularly those for children's books. Some of my favourites are Jeanne Baker (example), Brett Helquist, Shaun Tan (absolutely◊ amazing◊ drawings◊) and Edward Gorey (For kids, you know◊).
"Doctor Who means never having to say you're kidding." - BocajShaun Tan does all that in pencil? That's pretty amazing.
On a similar note to my last post, I just heard about this artist called Cola Gotouryouta.

Project progress: The Adroan (102k words), The Pigeon Witch, (40k). Done but in need of reworking: Yume Hime, (50k)I adore MC Escher. His work is amazing...and it seems to drive you a bit mad if you keep staring at it for long.
Gustav Klimt also has an interesting way of painting.
Please don't feed the trolls!Escher, always.
My favourite painter is probably Yves Tanguy.
I'll hide your name inside a word and paint your eyes with false perception.OH GOD, I'M GOING TO BURN ALL MY PENS AND KILL MYSELF.
Project progress: The Adroan (102k words), The Pigeon Witch, (40k). Done but in need of reworking: Yume Hime, (50k)As an aspiring comic artist myself, it probably comes as no surprise that the bulk of my list is comic artists. I've divided it up into sections because... uhm... apparently I like lists.
The Masters of Motion: Simply put, these are the guys whose art seems like it's about to burst off the page- even when it's a low-key scene, there's just something about their work that looks ready to violate the confines of the panel and pop off the page.
Jack 'King' Kirby. From all I've been able to find, Kirby was actually a bit embarrassed by the title 'King of Comics', but... eesh. The linework was often raw, the faces could sometimes be a bit strange-looking... and the damn stuff all but exploded off the page at you. There's nobody, but NOBODY, that could put the level of sheer energy into a page like Kirby. 'Nuff said!
Osamu 'god of manga' Tezuka. When someone basically creates an entire genre single-handedly, you know they've got some serious chops. It feels like we still haven't reached the outer limit of his imagination, even today. Tetsuwan Atom/Astro Boy was filled to the brim with over-the-top SF action that many artists would strain to portray even adequately, while the god of manga made it look effortless. And yet, within the wild whirlwind of action, the story almost always moved along briskly and clearly.
Sergio 'no-nickname-yet-that-I-know-of' Aragones. Well, no nickname other than maybe 'the fastest cartoonist in the world' (you doubt me? Oh, and for the curious, that was recorded more than 20 years ago, sometime around 1991. Sergio's still going, and as far as I know, hasn't slowed down much). Kinetic, vibrant art that is loaded with detail. I half-wonder if he got that fast because of his fondness for detail... only way to meet his deadlines and put in as much detailing as he wanted was to get insanely fast . Love his work, to the point that it's the only piece of commissioned original art I've managed to squeeze out the money for.
Timelords These are the guys that... I think the phrase runs something like 'mold the stuff of eternity like clay'. Time and space are jumping through hoops when they crack their whips, utterly at the service of the story.
Carl 'the Good Duck Artist' Barks. The story I linked to, 'Only a Poor Old Man', remains one of the most flawlessly-paced comic stories I've ever encountered. Every beat, every story element, every bit of art... dang near every line serves to complement the words and drive the story. Just flat-out amazing.
Stan Sakai. Also sadly nickname-less, Stan's spare, elegant linework works beautifully with his cinematic style and superb pacing. Really not much more I can say about him. Love his work, and he's a heck of a nice guy too, at least from my brief meeting with him at the SDCC a few years ago.
...wow. [bookmarks Nagai Hideyuki]
It's not just the 3D - it's the subtle anamorphic trick he's playing by photographing it from the right angle.
