Calling on DnD: I'm a Depressed Elf

So I started a game today, and I has questions.

The character I'm looking to play is a depressed elf. He's sad because he's seen friends die, but also because he's realized how terrible life is for people who aren't, well, wealthy elves like he is; it's bothered him and made him question pretty much everything he believed. While this was sort of a good thing for him- he's went from Chaotic Neutral to Neutral Good- it's also really torn him down, to the point where he believes in nothing anymore.

Just wondering what you people think of the character idea. I'm trying to play against type here; I usually play really heroic Neutral Good characters who are basically Knight in Shining Armor types with a side of Motor Mouth.

My initial gut reaction: it might be hard to play this character without getting snark from other players about him being the "emo" elf. If you think that could be a problem, you could play him as a stoic character instead.

World-weary characters are getting easier for me to play as I get older, which is fine by me since they can be fun in their own way. One of my favorite prestige classes is the "Grey Guard", basically a paladin who is willing to use extreme measures to take down the worst villains. Some of the flavor text for that class might be good inspiration for your elf, even though it sounds like you're not going for that template specifically.

Logged: The commanding officer is aboard. XO Pressley stands relieved.

I was actually hoping for more "The Eeeyore", though Stoic sounds good if I start catching flak. :D

Sounds like Xan for Baldur's Gate.

I love that elf.

Ok, you'll have to copy paste the link, I can't get it behave(it has an apostrophe)

He's got some parallels with the Buddha that you can explore.

Those who accept their fate find happiness; those who defy it, glory.

Well,it's pretty much the Buddha's origin story - he was a rich prince who had never wanted for anything, never experienced pain or suffering. When he stepped outside, and saw both these things,he was shocked.

From a storytelling POV,try going existential - you've come across evidence that this world is as insubstantial as a thought,or a story.wink Too meta?

Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away.
