I rarely see anyone dress metally outside of concerts. Goth is a different story, though.
I've got two guns pointed west and a broken compass.I like wearing black, but thats because years of being nocturnal leaves my eyes accustomed to dark colors. I wear anything from eart tones, to saturated cool colors, and of course blacks and greys
"Coffee! Coffeecoffeecoffee! Coffee! Not as strong as Meth-amphetamine, but it lets you keep your teeth!"I used to play D&D with a bunch of metalheads, and I would annoy them with my total un-metal-ness. Though, it was partially by their influence why I bought a Napalm Death album.
Curious. I tend to be the most metal of the people I play with, by which I mean They do not listen to metal in the slightest :P
"Coffee! Coffeecoffeecoffee! Coffee! Not as strong as Meth-amphetamine, but it lets you keep your teeth!"Metal is a genre that is pretty shaky for me. I respect plenty of metal bands but they sometimes only have one or two, if any, songs I like. There are many metal bands that I do like though for example Metallica, Judas Priest, Megadeth, and Black Sabbath. The ones I like tend to be more mainstream but often times they are more mainstream for a reason. If the metal becomes any heavier than those bands I tend to steer clear. Really heavy metal I can't stand there doesn't seem to be a true meaning behind it. E.g. Visions by Abnormality. That's the only death metal song I can name off the bat mostly because I can't pass it in Rock Band to save my life. X_X
Well in defense of death metal, the vocals in death metal are considered an instrument. That said I am not a huge fan of death metal.
last.fmThat "instrument" being a badly played Guiro?

last.fmIt makes sense. The guitars are distorted, why shouldn't the vocals be distorted as well? Of course I'm biased since I'm practicing to be a Death/Black vocalist.
Another thing I love about metal is the instrumentals. My favorite is The Call of Ktulu by Metallica. Instrumentals tend to be somewhat rare in metal as far as I've seen but the ones I have heard are almost invariably great. I would appreciate some suggestions.

last.fmMy favorite instrumental is this.
I've got two guns pointed west and a broken compass.Dream Theater - Dance OF Eternity... and most of Dream Theater, really, although the earlier stuff seems to be nicer, while the later is very technical.

last.fmVaasa.
The DM was an American emigrant. he was a fun guy, he later moved to Helsinki.
Heh. I can agree on the death metal bit, I dislike screamo or overly distorted lyrics. I prefer the voices to be clearly understandable once one gets past the accents

I've got two guns pointed west and a broken compass. Why do people care about lyrics so much? They're pretty much the least important aspect of the genre anyways, next to the vocals themselves. And if you wanna know what they're saying so bad, go read the lyrics. The vocalist isn't expecting you to understand him(her); they know that you can't and they specifically design the lyrics to be read (for the most part).
Why would someone go through the effort of writing lyrics if they didn't want to be understood? Isn't that against the idea of performing in general.
I guess Jandek was right.
Mathematics Is A Language.Ask Gaahl, or even the entire Black Metal subgenre. They don't want people to understand them. (musically and philosophically as well as lyrically)

That sounds pretentious and elitist. If I'm not going to understand the lyrics, I'd rather have an instrumental.
Instrumental metal is awesome, anyway. No need to ruin it by drowning it out with a boring shouty voice.

Also, the fashion in a lot of subcultures (like Goths, metalheads, etc.) looks borderline threatening.
I like to look like a nice person, myself.
